Wolverine volleyball puts up a good fight in five sets

The Weiser Wolverine volleyball team hosted the Cole Valley Christian Chargers on Thursday, Aug. 25 for the opening match of the 2022 season. After five sets of play, the Wolverines fell to the Chargers, losing 2-3. 
 The first set was close right from the start with the two teams evenly matched. With a score of Weiser 22, Cole Valley 22, the Chargers were able to serve tough taking the lead 24-22. 
 A Cole Valley tip into the net and a Mattie Shirts block tied the game at 24-24. A kill by Shirts gave Weiser the lead at 25-24. 
 A Cole Valley kill and two Weiser attacking errors handed the Chargers their final points of the set. The first set went to Cole Valley, Weiser 25, Cole Valley 27. 
 Weiser playing solid in the second set took charge of the game. Tied at 6 all, Madi Wilkins stepped up to the serving line and the Wolverines battled together with multiple kills to take a 15-6 lead.    
 The remainder of the set continued with back and forth scoring and the Wolverines never giving up the lead. Weiser took the second set, Weiser 25, Cole Valley 18.  
 Tied at one set each neither team was able to take a commanding lead in the third set. 
 The Wolverines, capitalizing on their strength and power with their front row attackers, gained a small lead midway through with a 2 point lead, Weiser 10, Cole Valley 8. 
 The set continued with the Chargers tying the game multiple times. Each time the Wolverines attacked gaining a small lead. 
 Near the end of the set, Cole Valley was able to score some crucial points, Weiser 22, Cole Valley 24. 
   With multiple set point rallies, the Wolverines tied the game at 24-24. 
 The teams traded points until Jasi Yraguen came up with a solid block giving Weiser the momentum. On the next rally with a stellar team effort, an assist by Danica Lockett and a kill by Kamryn Doty, the Wolverines gained the lead 27-26. 
 Lockett finished off the set with an ace giving Weiser the set three win, 28-26. 
 In the fourth set the two teams continued in similar fashion of trading points. The set ended with the Chargers in the lead, Weiser 23, Cole Valley 25. The match was tied at two sets each.
 Much like the rest of the match the teams traded points until the Chargers were able to take a small lead on a couple of Wolverine errors, Weiser 7, Cole Valley 9.
 Weiser came back with multiple tough plays and a Yraguen block, Weiser 11, Cole Valley 12. 
 The Chargers finished off the game with a block, ace and a Wolverine error taking the 5th and final set, Weiser 11, Cole Valley 15. 
 The early season opener went down to the wire with neither team willing to budge. Weiser won 2 sets to Cole Valley’s 3.
 Mattie Shirts led Weiser with 11 kills. Shirts was followed by Abi Wilkins and Paisley Noyer with 6 kills each. Jasi Yraguen led the Wolverines with 4 blocks. Bailey Coleman led the team with 19 defensive digs for the night. 
 The Wolverines hosted the Melba Mustangs on Tuesday, August 30. No scores or stats were available at the time of printing. 
 Weiser will travel to Nampa Christian on Thursday, Sept. 1 to play the Trojans.
