Weiser Wolverine baseball faced Caldwell Monday after a long spring break but didn’t seem to miss a beat winning the game 14-4 in five innings.
Lefty, Jarret Mink got the start for the Wolverines and went all five innings allowing only four hits and four runs throughout the game.
Mink also struck out six batters and showed some Wolverine prowess facing 23 total batters.
The Weiser Wolverines played in their first Snake River Valley 9-hole golf tournament on Monday, March 29 at Scotch Pines Golf Course in Payette. The wind was much calmer than the windstorm and gusts that had rolled through the night before.
Carter Williams led the Weiser boys varsity team earning the top medalist honors with a one under par score of 35. Devyn Young finished with a 47, Levi Estes and Rilee Willet had 55, and Calvin Clapperton a 63.
Weiser varsity boys and girls track teams put in a lot of strong performances at the April 2 meet in Payette. The meet was hosted by McCall-Donnelly. Several of the Weiser athletes posted personal record times. Both Weiser girls and boys took second place in a field of six teams.
The boys scored 191 points behind McCall-Donnelly with 251 points and Idaho City came in third with 89.5 points. The girls earned their second place with 137 points to follow McCall-Donnelly’s 215.5 points with Idaho City earning 82 point to take third.
The Lady Wolverines hit their home field for the first home game of the 2021 season for a non-league pairing against the visiting 4A division Caldwell Cougars on March 15, hoping to build on a winning streak following a 16-7 win over the Melba Mustangs and a heartbreaking, come-from-behind 10-16 loss to the Emmett Huskies.
Adding to their win column was exactly what they did, and they did it in commanding fashion in a 29-7 win in 4½ innings.
Weiser baseball was busy the weekend before spring break with three games during the 8-team Bill Betts Memorial tournament.
Weiser played against Melba to start the tourney off and just
couldn’t quite get the momentum that they had the first time that they played them. Weiser would end up losing the contest 5-4 in the last inning.
Jarret Mink started off the pitching for the Wolverines and lasted five and one-third inning giving up two runs on seven hits and walking zero.
The Weiser High School track and field team had their first meet of the season on their home track. Due to wintery conditions in McCall, the McCall team hosted the event in Weiser.
The tri-meet had McCall, Marsing and Weiser competing. McCall took first place in both the boys and girls with the boys scoring 98 points and the girls 95. Weiser came in second with the boys total team points at 66 and the girls at 55. Marsing placed third with 22 points for the boys and 17 for the girls.
The Weiser Wolverine tennis team hosted their first match of the season against Caldwell High School on ??.
It was a cool and windy day and not ideal for tennis but Weiser prevailed and won the close match, six to five.
Weiser’s doubles and mixed doubles teams played strong taking all but one match for the day.
The girl’s doubles team of Denica McClellan and Alexandra Froshiesar defeated Caldwell’s Dayna Buitron and Stephanie Victoriano 6-2, 6-3.
The Weiser Lady Wolverine varsity golfers hosted an invite tournament on Wednesday, March 17. The weather was calm and sunny making for a great day to be on the course.
Weiser’s young team played with poise and confidence. This was the first ever tournament for three of the five Wolverines.
Jasi Yraguen led Weiser with a 55, Gabi Palmer had a 57, Paige Johnson 64, Elle Svedin 68, and Isabel Rodriguez 69. Gabi is Weiser’s lone senior, Elle a junior, Jasi, Paige, and Isabel are all sophomores.
The Weiser boys varsity golf team played in an 18 hole tournament on Thursday, March 18 at the Desert Canyon Golf Course in Mountain Home.
The day started out windy with wind gusts that bent the flag stick over but luckily it calmed down a bit as the day went on.
Fourteen teams competed with Bishop Kelly bringing home top honors with a total score of 331. Cole Valley was close behind in second place with 333 and Ambrose in third with 334.
The Lady Wolverines kicked off their 2021 season with a road game against non-league, 4A competitors the Emmett Huskies on March 11.
The Lady Wolverines started strong taking the lead 1-0 in the first inning with a ground out RBI from Macy Maloney, bringing Ivy Morris across the plate. The Wolverine defense left a pair of Huskies stranded on base and scoreless after one inning.
The Wolverines added to their lead in the second inning with four hits and runs from Grace Swank and Kali Branstetter.
