The Weiser Wolverine men’s basketball team travelled to Payette to play the Pirates on Jan. 15. This is the second time they have met this season. Weiser defeated Payette in the Parma Christmas Tournament, 52-30.
This time it was a slower paced game. Payette struck first about a minute and half in.
Weiser’s Evan Haggerty scored first for the Wolverines with a short floater on a pass from Sam Kerner.
Next trip down the court, Kerner had another assist as he fed Brett Spencer at the top of the arc for a 3-pointer.
The Lady Wolverines travelled to the home of league competitors the Parma Panthers last week and hoped to expand on their recent league wins and exhibit their defensive skills and team play. Their plan was spoiled by a rough first half that was too difficult to overcome.
The Weiser Wolverine men’s basketball team hosted the Fruitland Grizzlies in their first conference game of the 2020-21 season on Jan. 12.
The rivalry between both teams makes the conference pairing a highly anticipated game where the stands are packed with students and fans for both teams. This time the teams played for a greatly reduced crowd which included six Weiser cheerleaders. This was the first game they were allowed to cheer for their team.
The game started out slow with several loose balls and missed shots by both teams.
Weiser Wolverine wrestling hosted Fruitland on Wednesday at Tom Falash Gym.
Anytime the Wolverines go against the Grizzlies there is a tension that fills the gym. There is also an elevated level of strategy that is involved during the dual.
Many athletes move weight classes in order to match up better with other wrestlers and maximize the number of points that the team can get.
The dual started out at the higher weights with 220 going first. Elijah Carter got the team going with some heavy hands and won the match by decision, 3-0 Weiser.
The Weiser Motel and RV Park, formerly known as the Indianhead Motel, is under new ownership of Josh and Crystal Shearer. The motel has undergone extensive renovations featuring a whole new look for visitors to enjoy when they stay here in Weiser.
The Shearers moved to Idaho in 2014. Prior to that Josh owned an architectural sign company creating a variety of signs for new schools, hospitals, apartments with his father for 25 years and Crystal was teaching high school math for 11 years.
The Weiser Wolverine men’s basketball team played the Emmett Huskies at home on Jan. 5. This was the first game of the season where spectators were allowed. Each athlete was able to invite two family members. It was far from the normal crowd and noise level, but it was great for parents to have the chance to watch their athlete play.
Weiser struggled to keep control of the ball on their first few possessions.
Emmett struck first with a rebound put back. Soon afterwards, Tyler Pope opened it up for Weiser with a baseline jumper.
The Lady Wolverines hit the hardwood again in 2021, following the holiday hiatus, and traveled to the home of the Homedale Trojans for a league pairing last Thursday.
Within seconds of the opening tip the Lady Wolverines scored with a Maddie Erickson lay-up from a nice feed from Tobie Noyer.
The Lady Wolverines initiated their full-court pressure and it proved problematic for the Trojans. Coupled with strong defense and numerous steals, the Wolverines held the Trojans to only one basket and a pair of free throws.
The Weiser Wolverine wrestling team was finally able to get on the mats for a competition this last week.
The Wolverines hosted the North vs. South duals last Wednesday night, inviting Fruitland, Bonners Ferry and Lewiston to town.
Normally this event takes place mid-season for Weiser but the pandemic has made life both interesting and difficult.
