Wolverine men win 58 to 44 over the Payette Pirates

The Weiser Wolverine men’s basketball team travelled to Payette to play the Pirates on Jan. 15. This is the second time they have met this season. Weiser defeated Payette in the Parma Christmas Tournament, 52-30.
This time it was a slower paced game. Payette struck first about a minute and half in.
Weiser’s Evan Haggerty scored first for the Wolverines with a short floater on a pass from Sam Kerner.
Next trip down the court, Kerner had another assist as he fed Brett Spencer at the top of the arc for a 3-pointer.
Payette was unable to convert on their offense and gave the ball back to Weiser. Spencer was then fouled as he made a three-pointer. At the free throw line he was able to give Weiser a six-point lead, 9 to 3.
Payette was able to find an open man scoring a three from the corner. With 1:40 left it was Weiser 13, Payette 11.
Near the end of the first, Eli Ruiz hustled up the court following Spencer on a fast break. Ruiz snagged a great rebound and put it in. The first ended Weiser 15, Payette 13.
Weiser came out in the second with tough defense putting pressure on Payette.
On the offensive side Weiser’s Brayden Walker started to light things up. First with a strong drive in for two points.
Payette was able to counter with their own points. Walker responded by hitting a nice three-pointer to give the Wolverines a six-point lead.
Next trip up the court, Walker snagged a loose ball after a missed Weiser shot, making a quick pivot he shot and scored.
The scoring stalled a bit until right before the half when Ruiz had a beautiful fake and then drove in for two points. The half ended Weiser 26, Payette 19.
The third quarter was back and forth with both teams struggling to get much of an offensive game going.
At the midway point of the quarter Tyler Pope had a great post up move. Shirts delivered the ball allowing Pope to score and was fouled on the shot. Pope went to the line and added another point giving Weiser a five-point lead.
Payette immediately struck with a three-pointer making it a two point game, Weiser 33, Payette 31.
On the other end for the Wolverines, Kerner found Ruiz in the corner for a nothing but net three-pointer.
The Pirates continued to fight, but the Wolverines took command of the game for the remainder of the third quarter.
Ruiz had a clean steal on defense then took the ball the length of the court for a lay-in.
Next trip down on defense, Shirts had a steal, taking it down for a lay-in.
The third quarter ended with Weiser up by seven points, 42-35.
The fourth quarter started much the same as the third ended. Spencer opened with a rebound and put back. On the defensive end, Shirts had another steal. With a bit of a loose ball scramble, Shirts ended up with a lay-in putting Weiser up by 11.
Halfway through the fourth, Weiser’s Ray Calley received a nice pass from Shirts as he came off a screen near the free throw line and then drove in for two points.
The rest of the fourth the scoring came from the free throw line for Weiser with multiple Wolverines going to the line. Weiser took home the win 58, Payette 44.
 Weiser scoring: Spencer 16, Ruiz 10, Walker 9, Haggerty 6, Pope 5, Malakye Scott 5, Shirts 4, Calley 2, Levi Estes 1.
