Wolverine girls team finishes state tournament play in fifth

The 2021 Idaho State Golf Tournament fell on a busy week for the Weiser Wolverine golfers.
The WHS varsity girls’ team qualified along with two varsity boys that made it as individuals.
Composing the girls’ team were senior Gabi Palmer, senior Rachele Storey, junior Elle Svedin, sophomore Jasi Yraguen, and sophomore Paige Johnson.
Boys were sophomores Carter Williams and Devyn Young.
Palmer and Storey graduated on Sunday in Weiser, then traveled up north to Coeur d’ Alene later that evening. They were up early Monday morning to start their first day of state tournament play at Twin Lakes Village Golf Club in Rathdrum.
The rest of the team went up early Saturday to get a practice round in before the tournament.
Overall, there were seven girls’ teams that qualified for state and eight boys teams, with an additional five girls and six boys competing as individuals. The tournament is played over two days with 18 holes each day.
Each team can have five golfers and the four lowest scores on each day are used for the total team score. Every golfer at the tournament has an opportunity to be a state medalist along with individual athletes.
Twin Lakes is a tough course with trees lining the fairways, an overabundance of sand traps, and plenty of water hazards. The weather can be unpredictable in northern Idaho, but beautiful sunshine greeted the golfers on Monday.
At the end of day one, the Weiser Wolverine girls’ team was in fourth place with a score of 482.
Bonners Ferry held first with 390, Kimberly second with 402, and Buhl third with 424.
In fifth place with a score of 486 was Kellogg. Marsh Valley was in sixth with 490 and Sugar-Salem in seventh with 549.
The boys’ individual race was quite tight with Weiser’s Carter Williams tied for first with Kellogg’s Stephen Paul, both with a one-over par 73. Fruitland’s Lucas Rynearson was close behind with a 74.
Devyn Young battled the course to end the day with a solid 98.
Scores: Kimberly in first, 325; Kellogg second, 326; McCall-Donnelly third, 358; Priest River Lamanna fourth, 371; Snake River fifth, 372; Buhl sixth, 381; Fruitland seventh, 388, and Teton eighth, 391.
Weather patterns changed for the worst on day two, with high wind gusts, periods of rain and hail, and a 20-degree drop in temperature.
The Wolverine girls’ team battled hard, but were unable to retain their four point lead on Kellogg, slipping a spot to finish the 2021 State Tournament in fifth place.
Bonners Ferry retained their lead ending the tournament as State Champions with a score of 756.
Scores: Kimberly second, 793; Buhl, third, 843; Kellogg fourth, 942, Weiser fifth, 972; Marsh Valley sixth, 985; and Sugar-Salem seventh, 1130.
For Weiser, Paige Johnson led the team with a total score of 237, Elle Svedin had a 240, Gabi Palmer 241, Jasi Yraguen 254, and Rachele Storey a 288.
Carter Williams entered day one tied for first.
Playing strong, he finished day two with a 4-over par, with a score of 76, giving him a two-day total of 149.
Williams had to wait about 45 minutes to see how Stephen Paul of Kellogg, who had also started the day with a 73, had finished.
Paul was able to finish with a score of 74, 2-over par, earning the title of State Champion with a total score of 147.
Williams had the honor of bringing home second place only two strokes back, an amazing accomplishment few athletes are able to obtain.
Rynearson ended the tournament in third place, with 151. Dathan Ova of McCall and Archie Rauenhorst of Kellogg were tied with 153 for fourth place.
Young, who also competed as an individual, came out strong and focused for day two. After day one, he was sitting with a score of 98. He was able to better his round by seven strokes, finishing day two with a 91 and a two-day total of 189. The sophomore is coming on strong and should be fun to watch over the next two seasons.
For the boys’ teams, Kellogg won the state title with a total team score of 656.
Scores: Kimberly second, 658; McCall-Donnelly third, 722; Buhl fourth, 755; Snake River fifth, 758; Priest River Lamanna sixth, 760; Fruitland seventh, 764; and Teton eighth, 785.
The Wolverines had a great season and look forward to getting out on the course this summer. Both teams are young and have an amazing start to some fun golf seasons to come.
