Wolverine baseball starts off with conference win
Fifteen hits was the magic number this past week when Weiser opened up conference play and continued with Melba. The Wolverines won both games and had a really good week of baseball.
Weiser was expected to play Saturday against Vale, but a lack of umpires cancelled the game.
Weiser opened up conference play against McCall with Willy Shirts on the mound. Shirts dealt well on the mound giving up 4 runs on 4 hits and striking out 8 batters. Jack Shirts came in on relief and gave up 2 runs on 1 hit. Kaleb Grove then closed out the game dealing 6 strikeouts.
The offense and the 15 hits were pretty important for the Wolverines during the game. Brett Spencer was first on the leader board going 4 for 4 on the night hitting 2 doubles to earn his team 3 RBIs. Spencer was in good company with Willy Shirts who went 3 for 4 and had 3 RBIs of his own. Koda Coers has also come back from an arm injury and went 2 for 3 and added 1 RBI along with Payton Albertson and Brock Spencer who had 1 RBI each.
Sophomores Kaleb Grove and Brock Spencer had a great bottom of the fifth inning for the Wolverines. Grove got to second on a double to start the inning and Spencer tagged the ball for a triple scoring Grove and bringing the game to a tie and getting the Wolverine momentum back in place.
Stolen bases were hot that night as well. Brett Spencer and Willy Shirts had 2 each and Jack Burke, Payton Albertson, Jack Shirts and Kaleb Grove all added 1 as well. JV and varsity played at the Walter Johnson Memorial field due to the McCall field not quite being ready for play. Weiser ended up winning both games and the final varsity score was 13-6.
Weiser then travelled to Melba to face the Mustangs yet again this season. Dylan Turrentine started on the mound for the Wolverines and pitched a gem of a game for his first start of the season and went 5 innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits and striking out 2 batters. Brock Spencer got his chance on the mound throwing 1 inning and giving the Mustangs 2 runs on 3 hits. Tommy Johnson threw the last inning for the Wolverines and the defense took care of the rest.
The Wolverines scored 17 runs off of 15 hits during the game winning 17-5.
The sixth inning was a big one for the Wolverines who put 6 runs on the scoreboard. Weiser had 16 RBIs for the night and Payton Albertson was pretty unstoppable at the plate. The senior went 4 for 4 on the night and launched a grand slam in the second inning and doubled in the sixth. He also added 4 RBIs to the team total.
Willy Shirts shined bright on offense as well with the lefty going 3 for 5 and adding 4 RBIs. Shirts had a double and a triple during the game. Koda Coers fought at the plate going just 1 for 4, but he made things happen with his at-bats adding 6 RBIs to his and the team’s totals. Weiser handled the Mustangs with ease and ended the week of baseball with two wins.
“I am happy with where we are at right now,” Head Coach Bowe von Brethorst stated. “We opened up conference with a win, everything is coming together and our hitting and the scores show that. We have two conference games coming up and we will be ready,” he added.
Weiser will host Payette and Parma this week on Monday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Walter Johnson Memorial Field. Come watch some baseball and enjoy the weather!
