WHS senior recruited to rodeo at TVCC

Weiser High School senior Sydney Cobb plans to continue rodeoing at the college level with the TVCC rodeo club.
Cobb signed her letter of intent to attend TVCC in April. She was joined by her parents, Kelly and Matt, TVCC rodeo club coach Drew Pearson and WHS assistant principal Drew Dickerson, who is also her uncle.
At TVCC she will compete in barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping and goat tying. She reached out to TVCC coach Drew Pearson and said she was interested in the rodeo program. It came down to a choice between TVCC and Blue Mountain Community College in Oregon.
“I really liked Drew’s program and the team, so that was a deciding factor,” Cobb said.
Pearson has already helped the team achieve success competing in the Northwest Region, which includes big schools like Texas Tech and the University of Texas.
He earned the 2018 Northwest Region Coach of the Year award in 2018. A former bullfighter in the rodeo arena, he has also been the Idaho Cowboys Association president for the last four years and he’s been on the board for 11 years.
Pearson said his immediate goal is to get a national title for TVCC rodeo, a program that dates back to 1969. Pearson wants to see the TVCC team continue to expand and recruit talent. The TVCC rodeo team is one of the largest in the Northwest with 45 students.
Cobb is a two-time state finals qualifier and rodeos as a member of the Idaho High School Rodeo Association in District 3. As a sophomore, she qualified for the state finals in goat tying, barrel racing and pole bending.
In her junior year, she qualified in barrel racing, pole bending and breakaway roping at state. She competed at the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca, Nev., in her junior year.
She has done a lot of rodeoing on her horse, Bullet, who competes in every event. He’s 10 years old and “pretty special,” Cobb said.
She looks forward to competing in rodeos at the collegiate level. The rodeo season goes from about October to May. Her coach and teammates will push her to get better and practice harder, she said.
“She will be a great addition to the team,” Pearson said.
At TVCC she plans to major in nursing this fall. She eventually wants to become a diabetes educator and nutritionist. A nursing program is a good academic foundation to get started on her career goals, she said.
“I feel like nursing is a good basis for doing diabetes education,” she said.
At Weiser High School, she has been active in a number of organizations. She is a member of the honor society and is the Weiser FFA president this year. She also is the president of the Idaho High School Rodeo District 3 and the Weiser River Rodeo Club.
Cobb comes from a ranching background and has been competing in rodeos since she was five. Growing up, her family spent their free time at rodeos and playdays all over the West. All of the Cobb kids love to compete and show off their horses.
