Weiser softball team plays doubleheader against Columbia

The Lady Wolverines hit the road for a trip to Columbia High School for a doubleheader last weekend against the 4A Wildcats.
The Wolverines took the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning from Grace Swank and Macy Maloney capitalizing on free bases on balls.  The Wildcats countered with one run in the bottom of the second.
The Wolverines added another two runs in the top of the third from Tobie Noyer and Maloney, but the Wildcats blew the game open in their third inning at-bat with four hits and six runs to take a commanding 7-4 lead.
The Wolverines added a run from Grace Swank in the fifth inning and managed to hold the Wildcats scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning, pulling within one run at 6-7.
However, the Wildcats took full advantage of a pair of walks and a series of Wolverine miscues to score four more runs in the sixth inning while the Wolverines grounded out three in a row.
In their final attempt at a comeback, G. Swank and Maloney tacked on two runs in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough and dropped the game 7-11 to the Wildcats.
Ivy Morris scored early in the second game of the doubleheader with the Columbia Wildcats, and the Wildcats countered with one run in the first inning.  However, a scoreless second inning for the Wolverines was offset by seven runs for the Wildcats off three hits (one homerun), three walks and one error.
The Wolverines chipped away at the Wildcat lead with five runs in the third inning from Morris, Cordes, Noyer, Branstetter and Lockett, all the while holding the Wildcats to only one run.
Trailing 6-9, the Wolverines were unable to bridge the scoring gap in the top of the fourth inning, and allowed the Wildcats to add three additional runs, to enable the Wildcats to take the game by mercy rule in four innings 12-6.
