Weiser outshoots Vale in 51-38 win

The Weiser Wolverines took an early double-digit lead over the visiting Vale Vikings on Saturday and picked up their second non-conference win in a week by the score of 51-38.
The Wolverines (9-5 overall) were the better offensive team as they shot nearly 50 percent from the floor against Vale, including a season-high eight 3-pointers, and dominated the boards with 28 defensive rebounds.
“I thought in the first half we played really really hard and we were really focused. And we had some mental breakdowns in the second half and didn’t play as hard,” coach Brad Adolfson said.
Weiser controlled the game and the tempo of play for much of the contest. The game was never in doubt as the Wolverines  built a lead over Vale that at one point was 20 points.
Both teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the game, but it didn’t stay even for long.
Two 3-pointers by Ande Jensen within a minute put Weiser up early 11-6. Jensen had the shooting touch early in the game, hitting five 3-pointers in the first half and tallying a season-high 17 points in the game to lead the Wolverines.
Not to be left out, Braden Bumgarner connected for two 3-pointers to increase Weiser’s lead over Vale to nine points at 17-8 with two minutes left in the first quarter.
A nice pass to Justin Estes inside added two points for Weiser as time ran out and the first quarter ended with the Wolverines out in front 19-8.
At times it was a physical game, if not a sloppy one, with players colliding on numerous occasions in pursuit of a loose ball or rebound. The Wolverines had 23 turnovers to the Vikings’ 17.
Vale’s Tanner Hamilton trimmed Weiser’s lead to seven points with a nice pull-up jumpshot in the paint for two points. He had 11 points for Vale. The Vikings trailed 20-13 with five minutes left in the second quarter.
Two more three-point baskets by Jensen in the second period, along with a bucket by Brett Spencer, who grabbed his own rebound for the put-back, pushed Weiser’s lead to 28-17 as the second period wound down. The first half ended with Weiser in front 35-19.
With a comfortable lead, Weiser was able to control the tempo and pass the ball around to get the higher percentage shots. A couple of fast-break plays gave the Wolverines their largest lead of the game at 42-24 with 2:30 left in the third period.
Vale’s Hamilton got a basket to get the Vikings back within 12 points. With 6:21 left in the third period, Weiser was out front 44-32.
Weiser’s Hayden Wilson Palmer grabbed a rebound for the putback and two of his seven points in the game. He also grabbed seven rebounds.
A 3-point basket by Kade Haueter, who led Vale with 13 points, cut Weiser’s lead to 10 points 48-38 in the final two minutes of the fourth period, but time was running out for the Vikings.
The Vale players couldn’t get the ball through the basket in the fourth period and didn’t have a stellar night shooting from the floor. The Vikings went 16-for-54 on all fieldgoal attempts and a dismal 1-for-21 on 3-point shots.
Palmer had the final points for Weiser with the put-back for two points. At the buzzer, Weiser had the win with the final score 51-38.
Jensen led the Wolverines with 17 points, followed by Braden Bumgarner, who scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Wilson-Palmer had seven points. Brett Spencer collected six points and three rebounds. Justin Estes and Caleb Harris each contributed two points in the win and Angel Magana had a point.
Weiser starts play in the Snake River Valley Conference on Thursday, Jan. 10, against Parma at home.
“Preseason is over now everyone is 0-0 and we get to start over again,” Adolfson said.
