Continuing Christmas season events, the Weiser Nazarene Church invites the community to share in the tradition of experiencing a drive through Nativity scene on Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The drive through Nativity is an annual tradition from the Nazarene Church that began in 2017 with an effort for the community to experience the message of Christmas from the convenience of their car.
It was felt that the drive through nativity would not only aid in the sharing of the Christmas message to a greater audience but would also offer a unique experience that did not compete with events at other churches.
Pastor Hunter Mizar said the activity started as a service to the community and has provided a truly uplifting experience for the members of the church’s congregation.
“This drive through Nativity has also given the church members a great opportunity to all work together. In one special evening you will find all ages, from children all the way up to our senior citizens, spreading the Christmas message together,” Mizar said.
Eight custom life-sized angels made by Mark McCord can be seen as viewers drive up to the church. After the angels, the drive through presents a total of 11 scenes portraying the different events of the Christmas story as recorded in the Bible. In total, the scenes are portrayed by 40 cast members all dressed in biblical costumes created by Jeri Kleppin.
Each scene features a reader board with a passage of scripture that describes the scene. This year the group has added several updated background scenes made by Bonnie Akbar and her studio Artful Bon. In addition to the new backgrounds there will be more live animals added to the cast.
Each drive through the Nativity program is usually between 15 and 20 minutes. Mizar said more than 400 people drove through the Nativity last year over the course of the weekend and the church is hoping that even more will drive through this year.
