Last Saturday presented a new opportunity to the Weiser Wolverines. They traveled up to McCall to play against the Moscow Bears.
Moscow coach Richard Gayler said he reached out to Weiser because, “Weiser has been a very dominant 3A team, and we’ve tried to play all the competitive teams this year. We have so much respect for Kathy (Bokides).”
Right away the Bears made goalie Gabe Rasmussen work with an aggressive offense that took several shots at the Weiser net. Moscow’s Colby Lassen finally got one ball past the Weiser defense 14 minutes into the game. Lassen used that energy to score again two minutes later.
With 12 minutes left in the first half, Moscow brought the ball back to Weiser’s side of the field and Max Mortimer was able to get a shot in the Weiser net.
Play went back and forth after that until, with just 6:30 minutes left, Mortimer scored another goal. He slipped the ball in during intense play right in front of the net.
Weiser’s Cristoval Alvarez took a ball to the face off a kick by teammate Joel Juarez with 36 seconds left in the half. While it didn’t break his nose, he did have to leave the field because of bleeding.
The first half ended with a score of 4-0 in Moscow’s favor. Rasmussen had 4 saves during the first half.
The second half started with more back and forth play, and Wolverine Marcos Tarelo was injured in a play in front of the Weiser net and was out the rest of the game.
Neither team was able to make a shot that counted until 19 minutes in. Weiser received an indirect kick off of a foul. Manny Perez took the kick and got the ball in the Moscow goal box. Ander Barbot got his foot on the ball and took a shot, which the Bear’s goalie deflected back into play. Barbot got control of the ball again and put it into the back of the net. This brought the score to 4-1, Moscow.
Chris Cornejo of Weiser took another shot at 3 minutes left of play, but Moscow’s goalie was able to get the save. The Bears responded with Spenser Scruggs making a shot that went into the inner corner of the Weiser net, giving the Bears a 5-1 lead over Weiser with only 2:30 minutes left of play.
The Bears tried to get another shot in, but were called off-sides. The game ended one minute later, with a final score of 5-1, Moscow.
After the game, Weiser coach Kathy Bokides was proud and stated that it was an awesome game.
“We played better; one of the best games we’ve played. This was a good team and we learned a lot, and adjusted as we went. We held them to just one goal the second half.”
Coach Gayler seconded Bokide’s remarks and said, “It was a fun game, especially the second half. Kathy made some changes that we just couldn’t get around.”
Weiser vs Fruitland (Sept. 13)
The Fruitland Grizzlies traveled to Weiser on Thursday. The game was a hard fought loss for the Wolverines, with a final score of 0-1 in Fruitland’s favor. This brought Weiser’s conference record to 2-3-1, and season record to 2-5-1.
Just minutes into the game, Weiser’s Cristoval Alvarez received a yellow card for tripping. As he was running with a Fruitland player going for the ball, his foot caught the heel of the Fruitland player.
Thirteen minutes into play, Fruitland made a shot that bounced off the post and put the play right in front of the net. Weiser finally cleared the ball from the net, but had a foul called on them which resulted into an indirect kick taken by Fruitland. It was a high shot that went over the net.
Fruitland’s Reynaldo Rodriguez took a shot, and defender Justin Estes was almost able to clear it, but the ball ended up deflecting off his foot and into the goal. At 17:30 minutes into the first half Fruitland was up 1-0.
Goalie Gabe Rasmussen had several saves accounted to him the first half. Weiser took several shots at the Fruitland goal, but all the shots were stopped by the Grizzlie’s goalie Julian Ramirez. The score at the end of the first half was still at 0-1, Grizzlies.
The second half of the game began with back and forth action, with neither side holding control of the ball for long. Halfway through, Chris Cornejo of Weiser received a yellow card after a collision with Fruitland’s Ramirez, who had come out of the box to stop the ball.
With 8 minutes left on the clock, Fruitland’s Ramirez received a yellow card for delay of game. He was taking too long to make a kick and was called for stalling.
Weiser offense gave good effort, but was not able to get a shot past Fruitland defenses. Wolverine defense along with goalie Dylan Miranda was also able to keep Fruitland from adding any points. The match ended with a  score of 0-1 in favor of Fruitland.
Coach Bokides was pleased with Weiser’s better job with dropping the ball to fellow teammates, and their improved communication during the game.
With only two games in the upcoming week, the Wolverines will have more time to practice to keep improving their skills. Tuesday, Sept. 18, will see the Payette Pirates playing here in Weiser. The Wolverines will travel back up to McCall on Thursday, Sept. 20, to play the McCall-Donnelly Vandals.
The week after will be another two-game week. Weiser will travel to Fruitland on Sept. 25 and head to Payette on Sept. 27.
