The Weiser Lions installed a slate of officers for the next year and presented numerous awards at the club’s annual picnic at Memorial Park last Wednesday.
Special guests included the teen and adult contestants for the Miss Western Idaho Pageant and Miss Three Rivers Outstanding Teen. Each young woman introduced herself and gave a brief statement about her community service project and what she will be doing for the talent portion of the pageant. The Weiser Lions are a longtime sponsor of the pageant.
Another guest introduced at the picnic was First Vice District Gov. Lynn Johnson, a member of the Caldwell Lions. Johnson, who represents Lions District 39W, made the trip from Caldwell to Weiser to participate in the installation meeting. He officially took his position on July 1.
The new president of the Weiser Lions is Dorothy Evans, a longtime member of the club who has served as secretary for the past five years. She was nominated by outgoing Weiser Lions president Marlene Plate.
Evans said it is an exciting time for the Weiser Lions. The club will be celebrating 90 years in 2020 with a charter party in February or March that will include all current and former members.
“I’m looking forward to being president because I’m so proud of our club.  It has accomplished so much for this town over the years and we hope to keep the contributions continuing for a long time to come,” she said.
The club installed a number of officers to oversee various club functions for the next year. The officers will serve until June 30, 2020.
Steve Penner is first vice president and will oversee concessions, a big part of the Lions Club fundraising efforts. Second vice president Juanita Moyle will run the club’s vision programs. The third vice president for membership is Julie Derr and the fourth vice president is Christina Isaacson and she will be in charge of the young Lions, also known as the Leos.
John Evans, a retired CPA, will retain his position as treasurer and Linda Youngblood will serve as secretary for the next year. The title of tail twister goes to Lois Watkins, and Don Moyle will take on duties as lion tamer. Marlene Plate and Karen Schaeffer will serve as board members of the club.
Perfect attendance pins were awarded to nine Lions, including Dorothy Evans, John Evans, Christina Isaacson, Don Moyle, Juanita Moyle, Steve Penner, Marlene Plate, Betty Simpson and Lois Watkins.
The Lion of the Year award for the Weiser club went to Juanita Moyle, who was selected for her service to the community and unwavering volunteer spirit. She had the countable volunteer hours of all members.
The Hallock-Weymann award for outstanding service to the club was presented to Marlene Plate, a two-time winner. Plate was selected for her great attitude and for “always saying, ‘I’ll do it.’”
The Heritage Award was given to Steve Penner, who has been a member of the Weiser Lions for nearly three decades. The award recognizes club members who have been Lions for a long time and been involved in many programs.
Certificates of appreciation were given to Sherri Breaux and Karen Schaeffer, who helped out in the Lions concession stand even before they became members of the club.
Appreciation pins were given to Don Moyle, who, in addition to putting in many service hours, has secured donations from his employer for the Lions. Christina Isaacson was recognized for starting and sustaining the Leos club at Weiser High School since 2016.
In addition to their work with sight and hearing, Lions clubs in the district are making an effort to include type 2 diabetes education and prevention as a wellness platform of the organization. Clubs are working to add more resources on diabetes available to members and the public.
The Lions meet at Idaho Pizza on the first Wednesday of each month at noon. and the third Wednesday at 5 p.m. Anyone interested in becoming involved in community service is welcome to attend.
