The Wolverine boys played a tough first half, unable to sustain momentum, losing to McCall

On Wednesday, Feb. 8 the Weiser Wolverine boys hosted the McCall Vandals for Weiser’s senior night.

Six Wolverines were honored, Brayden Walker, Michael Youngberg, Tommy Johnson, Malakye Scott, Tre Crockett, and Justin Padilla.
Weiser and McCall played earlier in January where Weiser lost by 13, 45-58. This time around the Wolverines played a tough first half, but were unable to sustain their momentum, losing by 24, 42-66.
The Wolverines were first on the board with a 3 from Malakye Scott, a minute into the game.
McCall put 4 points up with a bucket and 2 free throws – taking the lead.
Weiser’s second score of the night came from a nice pass from Jack Shirts to Scott beyond the arc for another 3.
Carter Jensen added 2 more for Weiser on a pull up jumper about 8 feet out.
The Wolverines added 4 more points in the final minute of the first. Shirts made a free throw and Kolin Cook sunk a 3 in the corner from a baseline pass under the basket from Braden Phillips.
At the end of the first it was Weiser 12, McCall 8.
Shirts gave Weiser a boost early in the second. He was fouled on a drive to the bucket, he went to the free throw line and made one of the shots. Working hard to secure the rebound on the missed second shot, Shirts made a bucket off his rebound.
Shirts then added two more off a rebound put back with 6 minutes to go with the score, Weiser 17, McCall 13.
The Vandals, not willing to let up, answered with a bucket on their end.
Next trip to offense, Cook took the ball into the paint for a lay-in and 2 points.
The teams battled to get control of the ball with multiple loose balls and some missed shots. McCall added a couple of free throws.
The Wolverines, fighting for control, managed to score off a loose ball. Scott on the ground near Weiser’s basket quickly batted the ball to Josh Mizar who was able to secure the ball and find the bottom of the net.
Cook ended Weiser’s scoring for the half with a 3 pointer.
Going into the locker room it was Weiser 24, McCall 28.
The Vandals jumped out to an 8-point lead before the Wolverines were able to stop the run with a 3 pointer from Walker.
With 5:30 to go in the third, Johnson found Walker outside for another 3 – reducing McCall’s lead to 4.
McCall slowly increased the gap throughout the third.
With 2:30 to go, Walker fed Youngberg in the corner for a nice 3.
After three quarters the score was Weiser 35, McCall 51.
Weiser stalled out in the fourth only scoring 7 points, while McCall continued to push points, adding 15.
The final points for Weiser came from Johnson as he posted up for an across the paint pass from Scott, sinking a beautifully executed post move for 2 points.
Weiser lost the contest to McCall 42-66.
Cook was the top scorer for Weiser with 9. Scott added 8 points, Walker and Shirts each with 6, Youngberg had 5, Jensen 4, and Johnson and Mizar with 2 each.
