Weiser High School club to sponsor a Kermes for Cinco de Mayo celebration

Weiser High School’s Future Hispanic Leaders of America (FHLA) is planning a Kermes on Friday, May 3. It will be in the high school parking lot from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A Kermes is a Mexican street-style carnival.
The Kermes will be reminiscent of Cabin Fever. There will be food booths featuring tamales, enchiladas, tostadas, flan, pastries, and specialty waters. Activities will include a cake walk, loteria (which is similar to bingo), and face painting.
The club would also like to do a piñata, or several, depending on donations. Dancers under the direction of Karina Rodriguez will perform. A table will be set up with various items that will be raffled off.
The food, activities and raffle will all be ticket based, and tickets will be sold at the door.
Adviser Juana Pulido said that the kids have letters that they are taking out to businesses asking for donations.
“This is a good opportunity for the kids to show their leadership, by demonstrating their ability to make this event successful. It is making them take ownership of the event. It’s also helping pull some of the shy kids out of their shells.”
If you have an item or service you would like to offer up for the raffle, or any other donations, please contact club adviser Juana Pulido at pulidoj@weiserschools.org, or call the high school at 208-414-2595.
FHLA used to do most of their fundraising during Cabin Fever, and has been looking for new ways to raise money. They decided a Kermes will be a good way to combine fundraising and sharing Hispanic heritage with the community.
“I feel like this will be a good get to know us experience. We want to be able to show our culture, and we want the kids to be able to show their leadership,” Pulido said.
The FHLA club is also called the Anti-Barrier Club because it accepts students from all nationalities. The goal of the club is to give students exposure to different careers, help improve their leadership skills, and introduce students to different colleges and universities.
Many of the events that the students attend also lead to scholarship opportunities. The club must come up with the funds to pay for the bus, gas, and any lodging needed when they go to these events.
Twenty-five students went to two university level events and received thousands of dollars in scholarships during the last school year. Last summer, members of the group were able to travel up to the Seattle area to visit Microsoft, University of Washington and Boeing.
