Weiser is headed to State after fighting their way through district play.

Winning three out of four games for the week is normally a good thing for the Wolverine baseball team.
However, when losing the one puts you on the road to a play-in game, the other wins could be bittersweet.
The Wolverines travelled last Monday to Homedale in district play. Weiser started out with Willy Shirts on the mound who went six innings and recorded five runs on six hits and struck out two batters.
The defense for the Wolverines recorded four errors total and couldn’t get the bats going. Ray Calley and freshman, Dylan Turrentine, were the only batters to record hits for the Wolverines.
“Homedale was a tough loss, especially when we just couldn’t get our momentum going, but I have faith in this team to rally and prove that they can do it,” Head Coach Bowe von Brethorst said.
Weiser hosted Parma Tuesday to continue district play.
Weiser 11, Parma 1
The Wolverines won handily, scoring 11 runs to Parma’s 1. Ray Calley got the start for the Wolverines and lasted all five innings played. Calley recorded one run on five hits and five strikeouts.
Weiser also played solid defense in the contest with only one error showing.
On offense, Weiser was solid with 11 hits for the evening. Tyler Pope was a perfect two hits at two at-bats while Brett Spencer went three for four on the night. Payton Albertson hit a homerun for the Wolverines, as well and went two for three at the plate.
Four other Wolverines contributed one hit to the cause including Willy Shirts, Jack Burke, Ray Calley, and Jarret Mink.
The fifth inning alone, the Wolverines added five runs to their total. Spencer also had a nice night in the RBI department with three. Pope, Albertson, and Mink would each add one to the RBI total. Weiser scored all 11 runs on 11 hits, as well.
Weiser 6, Payette 4
Weiser then hosted Payette on Wednesday and anyone who understands baseball knows that playing three games in a row takes a toll on your pitching and teams that have depth in this department usually have the upper hand.
Jarret Mink started on the mound for the Wolverines and did a nice job recording two runs on four hits, striking out eight Pirate batters and walking none. Mink went a total of six innings before Weiser relief pitchers Beau Shields and Brock Spencer took over.
Shields went a third of an inning tallying one run on one hit and getting a strikeout for the Wolverines. Spencer worked hard and with the Weiser defense, got himself out of a jam during the other two thirds of the inning and allowed one run on one hit for the night. Weiser didn’t record a single error in the game. The Wolverines ended the game with a score of 6-4, Payette utilizing two pitchers on the night, allowing nine Weiser hits.
The offensive side of the game was a fun one.
Beau Shields went three for four; Ray Calley and Willy Shirts went two for three.  Weiser also recorded six RBIs in the contest. Both Beau Shields and Ray Calley had home runs, and hits just seemed to come at the right times for the Wolverines.
“We had some really good pitching the past couple of games and on offense. When we hit the ball and work the pitch counts we have success,” Bowe von Brethorst stated. It was really fun to coach them tonight and see it pay off. We have to go to work again and end the week on the right side of the ball.”
Weiser travelled to Lewiston to face Timberlake in the play-in game to move on to state.
Weiser 12, Timberlake 5
The Wolverines always travel well with lots of support from family and fans.
Weiser got going early in the game with Ray Calley once again on the mound. He recorded five hits with two runs and two strikeouts during his four innings on the mound.
Weiser changed pitching when Timberlake got some timing on Calley and brought in Willy Shirts from center field.
Shirts faced a few batters and the Wolverines had a couple of errors, and, before the crowd knew it, the game was 5-4 with no outs and Weiser was down in the top of the fifth inning.
Jarret Mink came to the mound with two runners on and immediately recorded a strikeout. He settled in after hitting a batter with a pitch and recorded another strikeout for the Wolverines and a nice line out to center field and Willy Shirts ended the inning.
Weiser would get on base with a single by Beau Shields and Koda Coers, and a walk by Mink.
Tyler Pope came to the plate and hit a nice double scoring two.
Calley would get on due to an error in the field and score Pope along with Brock Spencer who was running for Shields.
The score was now 8-5 in Weiser’s favor.
The Wolverines would add four more in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 12-5 and final of the game.
Tyler Pope led the Wolverines in hitting with two hits of three for the day. Multiple Wolverines recorded hits during the contest including Coers, Mink, Jack Shirts, Shields, W. Shirts, and Kooper von Brethorst.
Weiser also had an astounding 10 RBIs with Pope recording three for the day.
The Wolverines will go into the state tournament this Thursday at 4 p.m. versus undefeated Marsh Valley at Fruitland High School.
 Go Wolverines!
