The Lady Wolverines hosted the Payette Pirates on Tuesday, Dec. 8, ending in a win, 70-56, for Weiser in their first conference match of 2020.
Opening tip off went to Weiser’s Tobie Noyer who drove in for a quick two points.
Both teams used full court pressure, generating a fast-moving game.
The first three minutes of the  game were a frenzy of action, Weiser  five, Payette six. This is where Weiser came alive with their press and had a few defensive stops. Ivy Morris added a nice three pointer to take the lead 8-6.
Payette went ahead 8-13, when Madisyn Collingwood was fouled on a made shot under the basket and made her free throw.
It looked like Payette might create a larger lead with a few miscues by Weiser. Then Weiser’s Noyer took control of the game, hitting a three from a kick out on a rebound by Jenifer Juarez. Weiser stopped the Pirates with a Noyer defensive rebound, taking it the full length of the court. She sunk a three at the buzzer. First quarter, Weiser 19, Payette 17.
The second quarter was a stalemate until about halfway through when Weiser’s Maddy Erickson struggled with Payette’s Lexi Points to secure the ball. Erickson went back up with Points on her arm, sending her to the line. Erickson made both free throws giving Weiser the lead at 26-20.
The quarter continued with rivalry and strong positioning under the basket. With 2:45 left, the Wolverine’s Macy Maloney took a charge at mid-court. This created a heated argument from the Payette coach. Weiser stayed focused. Morris widened the lead, 30-24 with a three from the corner. Weiser went into halftime ahead 36-29.
Coming out of the locker room, it took a few minutes for Weiser to settle into the intense speed of the game.
Mattie Shirts came alive in the third when she was fouled by Payette’s Sofie LeBow. Shirts made her first free throw, missed her second, but came down with the  rebound. Going up strong she scored two, creating a three-point swing for Weiser. At the other end of the court, Shirts stopped Collingwood on the breakaway, blocking Collingwood’s shot.
Intense play continued, the third quarter ended with Erickson picking up her fourth foul with one second left and a tight score, Weiser 50, Payette 42.
With 5:26 left in the fourth, Payette had reduced Weiser’s lead to four points, 51-47. From that point on, Erickson and the Wolverines were unstoppable as Weiser continued to widen the gap. With four fouls, Erickson played tough defense and added 16 points in the fourth quarter alone.
The game ended with a basket by Maloney with 6 seconds left. Final score Weiser 70, Payette 56.
Erickson led the team with 32 points, Noyer 14, Morris 13, Shirts 6, Ellie Svedin 3, Maloney 2.
Coach Laraine Harrison said, “It was nice to have a win, 70 points for the girls was great. Our hope is to carry this confidence into Thursday’s game with Tri-Valley.”
The Weiser’s JV won 53-22. Brady Reed had a high of 20 points for the first win of the season.
The frosh/soph added a Weiser win 33-19. Danica Lockett led the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Trista Buescher and Riley Roberts had eight and seven rebounds respectively.
