The Weiser Wolverines traveled to Melba on Thursday, Dec 10 where they met the Mustangs for the second time. Weiser came up short losing 39-69.
Melba’s Braden Volkers was first to score. After a few trips down the court, with 6:18 left in the first Weiser’s Ray Calley scored a midrange jumper. Weiser 2, Melba 4.
Weiser possessed the ball for much of the first quarter working it around on the offense. Melba played tough defense not giving Weiser much to look at on the inside. Melba converted on most of their possessions.
With 2:05 left on the clock Weiser’s Evan Haggerty blocked Joe Reiber’s shot. Brett Spencer secured the ball taking it to the other end for a lay-in.
Calley hit another jumper to add two more for Weiser. Melba capitalized on turnovers by Weiser ending the quarter Weiser 6, Melba 18.
Early in the second, Melba and Weiser swapped missed shots. A minute and half in, Spencer was fouled on an inbounds play under Weiser’s basket. He missed the layup but made both free throws.
Next trip down the court Haggerty drew a charge foul when Melba’s Henry Clark tried to take the ball in for a layup.
Midway through after Melba scored a couple of buckets Weiser called a timeout. On the inbounds play with a quick pass up court from Eli Ruiz to Spencer resulted in an easy lay-in.
Weiser had a spark of life playing tough defense and getting a few shots off on the offensive side. Melba took a 30 second timeout to regroup. Even with the tough play Weiser was unable to convert and put points on the board. The first half ended with Weiser 12, Melba 34.
Weiser started the third quarter with a stop and had the ball for most of the next 2 minutes. Melba finally took advantage of an offensive opportunity and Volkers sunk a three.
Soon after, Weiser’s Braden Walker drilled a three from the corner with an assist from Calley. A kicked ball gave the ball back to Weiser, where Walker hit another three assisted by Michael Youngberg, Weiser 18, Melba 37.
With about 2 minutes left in the third, with an assist from Eli Ruiz, Levi Estes had a high post move slipping to the basket where he was fouled and sent to the line making his free throw. At the end of the third it was Weiser 23, Melba 49.
Weiser’s Walker struck first in the fourth with another three from the corner assisted by Angelo Reyes.
With 6 minutes left in the game, Spencer connected with Estes on another post move for two points. A minute later Ruiz picked up an offensive board for the Wolverine’s and put it in bringing the score to 28 Weiser, 54 Melba.
In frustration over Haggerty’s intense defense, Melba’s Henry Clark picked up a foul as he pushed off, sending Haggerty to the floor.
The game finished out with both teams picking up a few more buckets. Weiser lost 39 to 69.
The Wolverine’s were led by Spencer with 11, Walker 9, Calley 6, Estes 5, Haggerty 3, Ruiz 2, Reyes 2, and Isaiah Oarbeascoa 1.
Weiser hopes to travel to the Tri-County Tournament in Nampa Dec. 17-19. If the Nampa School Board allows their winter sports to start back up, Weiser will face Columbia High Thursday night.
