Tolman captures 3A state tennis title

With the end of the school year, spring sports wound down with all Weiser High School sports teams competing at state tournaments.
 The Weiser Wolverines tennis team sent two girls’ singles players, two boys’ doubles teams, one girls’ doubles team and one mixed doubles’ team to the state tournament in Boise held May 21-22.
 Weiser placed third for the girls with a score of 34.5 points. Parma took first at 55 points and Fruitland was only four points ahead of Weiser at 38.5.
 The boys tied for eighth place with Coeur d’Alene Charter at 5.5 points. Sun Valley Community took first with 68.5 points and the two SRV schools, Parma and Fruitland, took second and third with scores of 34 and 18.5, respectively.
 The Weiser team took the coveted academic 3A honors with a combined grade point average of 3.915.
 Emma Tolman, Weiser’s number one girls’ singles player, ended the tournament with the 3A championship medal. Her first match was against Emmie Told from Grangeville taking a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win.
 Her next match was against Julia Ott from Sun Valley Community, taking the win easily 6-3, 6-1. Her semifinal match against Alyssa Owens of Sugar Salem was her only match going three sets.
 Tolman lost her first set 5-7 and came back to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 for the match win. This put her into the championship match against Austin Harris from Parma. Tolman took the match in two sets 6-4, 7-5 to bring home the first place medal.
 Weiser’s number two singles player Kristy Bake also qualified for the state tourney. Her first match was against Ginger Goins from Grangeville. Bake did not allow Goins to win one game ending the match 6-0, 6-0.
 In the quarterfinal match, Bake lost to Austin Harris from Parma 6-3, 6-1, putting her into the consolation bracket.
 Bake beat Passon Fulmer from Orofino 8-0. She beat her Clearwater Valley opponent, Ashton Mangum 8-0 to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket against Ana Baurier from Sugar Salem. Baurier won the match 6-1, 6-4 to take third place, with Bake taking fourth place.
 Weiser qualified two teams to compete in the boys’ doubles event. Number one doubles players Charlie Woods and Ethan Davis and No. 2 doubles team of Mason Davis and Brylee Williams.
 Woods-Davis started the tourney with a win over their Orofino opponents Emery-Hepworth taking a 6-1, 6-2 win. They advanced to the quarterfinal match against Huss-Bradshaw of Sun Valley Community, taking a 6-2, 6-0 loss dropping them down into the consolation bracket.

The No. 2 doubles team of Brylee Williams and Mason Davis played their first match against Sun Valley Community taking a 6-2, 6-2 loss. This loss pitted them against Weiser’s number one team. Woods-Davis would pull out the win 8-6, but they would lose to Fruitland opponents Davis-Hanigan 8-5.
 The girls’ doubles team of Bailey Coleman and Britynn Seward took their first match against Goicoa-Brown of Grangeville in perfect sets, 6-0, 6-0. Seward-Coleman advanced to play Peterson-Motgomery of CDA Charter, taking the match in three sets. They won the first set 6-2, lost the second in a close 5-7 and won the third and final set 6-2.
 They would then take on Leavitt-Wagstaff from Parma and took a 6-0, 6-1 loss. Moving into the consolation bracket, they went up against another Parma team and took an 8-6 loss.
 In mixed doubles, Weiser sent brother and sister team of Denica and Huntyr McClellan to state. Their first match was against Spoor-Nelson of Sun Valley Community, winning the match 7-5, 6-4. Their next pairing was against Huff-Buster from Fruitland, taking a 6-2, 6-0 loss.
Their next opponent was Grangeville’s Kinsley-Bishop. The brother and sister duo beat them 8-1. They then faced Faulkner-Johnson from CDA Charter and lost the match 8-5.
 Congratulations to Emma Tolman for taking the number one singles medal and to all the Wolverines who qualified for state.
