Students get creative with prom invites

Another activity filled prom season has come and gone for Weiser High School students.
The season began with the upperclassmen asking their dates. These invites can range from a simple asking to elaborate hijinks.
Senior Haylee Facer asked her longtime boyfriend, recent Weiser graduate Colton Burr, by using a giant 7 foot rubber duck she blew up. She placed it in his backyard with a sign that said “I’d be one lucky duck if you’d go to prom with me.”
Pedro Ixta, a junior, asked sophomore Tyra Ramirez by Saran-wrapping all the items in her room, then placing signs that read, “Let’s wrap up 2019 with a good time at prom.”
Some students got creative with their answer also. Nathan Turner asked fellow junior LynnZ Rasmussen by creating a crime scene in her room. He put crime tape around her room and had different papers around the room that once put together asked “Would it be a crime for me to take you prom?”
She was creative in her answer, and a little diabolical. Rasmussen’s parents had the idea to have her uncle, a local law enforcement officer, to continue on the crime theme, and “arrest” Turner for entering her bedroom.
With permission from Turner’s father, high school music director Mike Turner, Rasmussen’s uncle came during choir class and began questioning Turner for his actions. The uncle even went as far as cuffing Turner, before telling him that Rasmussen said yes to prom.
Rasmussen said, “It was hard to keep a straight face by the end, but his back was turned towards us so we didn’t have to that much.” Turner was definitely concerned during the prank, but finds it very funny and creative now.
Group dates are a popular pre-prom event. Often, these happen the weekend before prom and can be quite elaborate. One set of students, which included eight couples, did an “Amazing Race” date, in which they did different events around town. Another set of couples went out and shot shotguns, then did a movie night.
The day of prom is filled with getting ready and often the groups get back together for dinner before the dance.
The theme of the dance was decided on by the junior class officers, and was “Rustic Romance.” The city donated the Vendome for the night and class officers Tim Reed, Andrea Bouvia, and Kendyll Spencer decorated with help.
Staff adviser Susan Alves said, “Tim, Andrea, and Kendyll did a phenomenal job of keeping to their vision, keeping within their budget, and soliciting the help of parents.”
Tickets for the dance were only $5 a person, the officers set the price and wanted to make sure it stayed within budget for everyone who wanted to attend. There were 189 tickets sold and 188 kids attended. Students were allowed to have out of district dates, if they filled out the proper paperwork beforehand.
This year there was a Prom Court. Voting was done at prom, and there was a Junior Prom King and Queen, and a Senior Prom King and Queen. Faith Lee and Layton Tolman were voted in as the Junior Royalty, and Sydnee Reyes and Brody von Brethorst were the Senior Royalty.
