St. Luke’s Church will offer free soup on Thursdays by curbside pickup or delivery

On Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Weiser’s St. Luke’s Episcopal Church will begin offering free bowls of soup made from scratch by volunteers.
Free soup will be offered weekly, every Thursday at the same time by curbside pickup or delivery. An annual event that can last from January to April, the church’s priest Blake Coats said the soup event has taken place at least ten years at the St. Luke’s location.
The idea of a free soup day was originally proposed by a member of the organization who was interested in putting forth the effort to make the event work, said Coats. Since its beginning, the event has grown and evolved over its many years.
Initially, the church provided soup made by a professional chef. For the past several years, each batch of soup has been made by volunteers with their own unique recipes and homemade touch. No soup has ever disappointed, said Coats.
“[The chef] has his own range of recipes that he varied and they were all very good,” said Coats. “We took over with members alternating, doing soup recipes from scratch.”
Initially, the event was created with the intention of providing a free meal once a week to individuals in need, adding to the agencies in the area that provide services. While still providing to any person in need of a meal, the event unexpectedly evolved into a form of fellowship. St. Luke’s volunteers eventually found themselves witnessing fellowship among groups and individuals from mahjong players to book clubs.
“It kind of ended up, a lot of people who were just long-time townspeople came and they just enjoyed a chance to get out Thursday noon and visit with each other,” said Coats. “At first we thought the need was for nourishment, but as it turned out, there was the need for fellowship.”
Different from previous years, St. Luke’s will not be offering the dine-in option. Rather, individuals may pick up a bowl of soup curbside at the church’s location or calling and requesting delivery. Different from previous years as well, Coats said he is unsure of how long the event may last. Usually running weekly from January until April, he said this year the church volunteers will judge the situation as time goes, depending on need and demand of soup.
“Part of our mission is to find needs in the community and try to serve and answer them,” said Coats.
Orders for delivery can be made by phone call between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at 208-606-9964. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is located at 106 East Liberty St. in Weiser.
