Spanish conversation club meeting at Weiser library

The Weiser community has a new club that is expanding people’s language skills and sharing culture from South America.

 Marcelo Zapata and Joey Endicott, two Weiser High School teachers, have begun a Spanish Conversation Club that is meeting every other Friday night at the library. The meeting takes place in the back room of the library at 7 p.m. The next meeting will be Friday, Feb. 1. 

 Zapata is new to the area, this is his first year teaching Spanish at the high school. Endicott is right across the hall teaching math and coding. Endicott has been using an app to learn Spanish, but was wanting to actually practice what he was learning with others. The two of them decided to begin a club where people could have a chance for casual practice of Spanish. 

 The meetings are casual, with small groups breaking off and talking together about a myriad of topics, such as music, sports, and food. There will be some sort of snack every meeting. At their last meeting, the new Mexican restaurant in town, Los Poblanos donated a dinner.

 Meetings began in September, with most of the members being students from Zapata’s classes. A few community members have also shown up. Zapata and Endicott would love for the group to expand and welcome any community members of any age that would like to come. 

 Zapata has big hopes for the group. He would love to see the attendance get higher and more varied. 

 “We would love to have a night of salsa dancing sometime,” he said.

 High school sophomore Moses Hernandez has shown up to every meeting, “I like everything about this. We’ve had fun every time. Teaching Mr. Endicott has been really fun.”

 Endicott agreed, “It’s cool to see the students be the experts in something you’re struggling with.”

 Follow sophomore Gabi Avila has also been to every meeting, and agreed that it was a fun way to spend a Friday night. “We talk about a lot of stuff, especially other countries and their heritage.”
