School District removes mask requirement

Weiser School District officials have removed a mandate requiring face coverings be worn on all school properties during the day and at school events.
The Board of Trustees for the District met in a special meeting on Thursday, April 29 to consider the change to its Pandemic Operations Plan, ultimately electing to downgrade the requirement for face coverings to a recommendation.
 The change is effective immediately.
“Considering current local conditions and several other factors, the Board elected to remove the requirement for face coverings and, instead, ‘Recommend’ that face coverings be worn by students, staff and visitors during the school day and school events,” Weiser School District Superintendent Wade Wilson said in a district-wide letter.
Previously, students and staff were required to wear face coverings if they were less than six feet in proximity to one another, according to the letter.
The District could revert back to the earlier policy if conditions change in the future.
There has been no change in quarantine guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control for those exposed to individuals who have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
“Additionally, the board voted to update the Pandemic Operations Plan to include language that the District will ‘consider’ the recommendations provided by the CDC, Southwest District Health and other pertinent organizations,” Wilson stated in the letter. “However, the District will still adhere to any mandates.”
In a separate action, the Board authorized Weiser High School to search for another venue for this year’s graduation ceremony, which is typically held in the school’s gymnasium.
State Board of Education regulations restrict attendance for school activities to 40 percent gym capacity.
Graduation is currently scheduled for Sunday, May 16 at 2 p.m.
The public will be immediately informed of any changes.
