Candidates seeking elected offices in a number of special districts in Washington County, including library, highway and hospital districts, filed the paperwork by last Friday’s deadline.
The Cambridge Library District has one trustee position up for election in May. Judith Worle, who is new to the board, filed for the office.
The Midvale Library District has two trustee positions up for election. Two incumbents on the library board, Elsie Coburn and Virginia Seid, filed to retain their seats and were not challenged.
The Weiser Valley Hospital District had three trustee positions up for election on the seven-member board, which has oversight of Weiser Memorial Hospital.
Incumbents Mike Hopkins and Chuck Kroll filed to retain their seats. Newcomer Sherry Young filed for the third seat and is unchallenged. Trustee Deb Dawson did not file to keep her board seat.
The only contested race is for a seat on the Weiser Valley Highway District. There are two seats on the district up for election.
Incumbent Wayne Stafford filed to keep his seat in subdistrict 1 and was unchallenged.
Incumbent Bruce Winegar filed to retain his seat representing subdistrict 3. He has been challenged by Tim Smedley, who also filed candidacy papers for subdistrict 3.
Only voters in the highway district will vote on that race for office in the May 21 election.
The deadline for any candidate to withdraw before the May 21 election is 5 p.m. on April 8.
Individuals who seek to run as write-in candidates must file a declaration of intent by 5 p.m. on April 5.
There will be two separate measures on the May 21 ballot for residents residing within the city of Cambridge and in the Cambridge School District.
The school district will be seeking approval of a $100,000 plant and facilities levy for five years. Voters in the school district will decide the fate of that measure.
The city council in Cambridge will ask municipal water customers to approve a $1.75 million bond measure to pay for water system improvement. The bonds will be paid off with revenue from water users over many years.
In addition to the May 21 election for the special districts noted above, there will be a general election in November for other taxing district offices in the county.
In odd-numbered years, voters will also elect officials to serve on cemetery, fire protection, recreation and school boards in the county in November.
The county clerk’s office also will run city elections in Weiser, Midvale and Cambridge on Nov. 5. Only residents of those respective incorporated cities can run for office and only residents can vote in city elections.
The filing for city offices is a few months away. In addition to the mayor’s office, there will be three seats on the Weiser City Council up for election. Filing for city offices begins Aug. 26 and ends Sept. 6.
The same process is followed with prospective candidates filling out and submitting a declaration of candidacy.
