Many turn out to remember former Weiser mayor

A celebration of life for former Weiser Mayor John Walker Jr. filled the Vendome Events Center in Weiser on Saturday afternoon.
Many attended to pay their respects and share memories of Walker, who died on Jan. 18 at age 77.
Mementoes of his life, including the 32 years he spent in the military and his beloved Weiser letterman’s jacket, were on display in the hallway.
Born and raised in Weiser, Walker was a lifelong booster of his hometown “100 percent,” as a former council member said.
After working as city clerk and coordinator, Walker was elected to the city council in November of 2003 and took office in Janaury of 2004. Four years later, he ran for mayor against the incumbent and won the office.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, who he met and married in 1975 while stationed at Gowen Field. The family moved back to Weiser in 1994 after Walker retired from 32 years of military service.
He was buried at the Idaho Veterans Cemetery.
