During his high school years Les apprenticed as a tombstone and memorial stone cutter in the Santa Cruz and Live Oak areas.
In the 1950s Les was the hay foreman for Henry Cowell in Santa Cruz on the Cowell Ranch.
Les began an independent excavating company in the early 1960s and in 1962 married Joyce Anderson with whom he spent 50 years until her passing in 2012.
Les was preceded by his father, mother and his wife Joyce.
He is survived by his brother John Strong of Weiser, nephew Greg Strong of Danville, Calif., and niece Carol Counter of Baldwin City, Kansas, as well as son David of Weiser, and beloved daughter Lillian Liberatore-Ryan of Watsonville, Calif.

Les had many friends, worked hard all of his life to provide for his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He spent a good part of his life helping youth learn trades and move forward from difficult circumstances.
In his excavating career he often shaped the land with his equipment leaving a lasting and meaningful difference in the world. He often said, “If it doesn’t look like God did it, the job isn’t finished.”
