Lady Wolverines start season with three losses

The Lady Wolverine’s soccer had a rough first week with one conference loss and two nonconference losses. The Wolverines traveled to Homedale on Aug. 23 and fought a hard game against the Trojans ending with a 4-3 conference loss.
Weiser then played an aggressive Ontario team at home on Aug. 25 that ended in a 6-0 loss for the Wolverines. Both teams struggled with multiple errors, Ontario with several offsides calls and improper throw-ins.
Wolverine goalie Whitney Turner saw a lot of action from the aggressive Tigers. She worked hard to try and keep the Tigers from scoring even literally tangling with a few Ontario players. The Tigers first goal came about 15 minutes into the game on a free kick.
Ontario kept heavy pressure on the Wolverines scoring four more times before the end of the first half.
With only minutes left in the first half, Turner took a hard hit by an Ontario player that kept her out for the rest of the game on injury. Number 28, Beth Philips took over goalie duties.
The second half went better for the Wolverines, giving up only one goal, but they were unable to get past the Tigers goalie for any points of their own.
“It was a good game, especially the second half was a lot better,” Coach Trine Loenberg said. “We don’t have all of our players yet because of the ten-practice rule. To us these first couple of games are not going to mean anything because we have just started. So, we will just take this as a learning experience and go from there.”
Their final loss of the week was against Sun Valley Community School. The Cutthroats won the game 3-0.
The Lady Wolverines will face off against the Fruitland Grizzlies this week in a non-league game on Sept. 1. The J.V. game will start at 4 p.m. with varsity following at about 5:30 p.m.
