Lady Wolverines are the 2023 SRV District Champions


HEADING TO STATE – Going into the last game of the SRV District tournament the Lady Wolverines, who already earned a berth to the state tournament, was looking to bring home the District championship trophy and medals. They played the Parma Panthers and won with a score of 51-47. Weiser will start the State Tournament with their first game on Thursday, Feb. 16 at Skyview High School at 5 p.m. Team and coaches from left, Coach Taylor Roberts, Assistant Coach Niki Erickson, Hannah Samson, Kendall Rynearson, Jasi Yraguen, Ellie Shirts, Tobie Noyer, Kailee Lerew, Mattie Shirts, Brady Reed, Quinci Marvin, Macy Maloney, Trista Buescher, Rylee Roberts, Head Coach Loraine Harrison and Coach Dave Shirts. With a 51-47 win over Parma, Weiser brings home the district title

The Lady Wolverines traveled to Parma on Thursday, Feb. 9 to face the Panthers in the SRV District Championship.  

 The Lady Wolverines played with heart, teamwork, and poise, finishing the tournament as SRV District Champions, winning 51-47. 
 The last time the Wolverines claimed the title was in 2016. 
 Parma struck first with a bucket. Weiser answered with a pass from Macy Maloney to Tobie Noyer on the block and a bucket. 
 The Panthers scored again with a 3 pointer. Weiser’s Mattie Shirts found Brady Reed open beyond the arc for a Wolverine 3. 
 With 4:52 to go in the first, Parma scored again; their final bucket of the first.
 The Wolverines continued pushing points. 
 Tobie Noyer hot scored two quick three’s; first off a pass from Ellie Shirts and then on a one dribble jab move.
 Noyer then found Maloney open in the corner for Weiser’s fourth 3 pointer of the quarter. 
 E. Shirts picked up a steal going coast to coast for a Weiser lay-in. 
 M. Shirts, who battled all night under the basket, playing tough was fouled as she worked for a rebound put back. At the line, Shirts gave Weiser two more. 
 With 1:50 remaining, Jasi Yraguen blocked a Parma shot, her first of multiple great defensive moves.
 The first ended with Weiser’s Noyer getting a pass from Reed beyond the arc for another 3. 
 The 17-point scoring run put Weiser up 22 to 8. This large cushion came in handy at the end of the game when Weiser battled to hold their lead.
 The second was a defensive stand as neither team put much on the board. The Wolverines added 7 points while the Panthers put up 6. 
 Weiser’s scoring came from M. Shirts playing strong inside made a bucket. Kailee Lerew on a lay-in for 2. The final points came from Reed as she sunk another 3.  
 Going into the locker room it was Weiser 29, Parma 14.
 The Wolverines started strong in the third, increasing their lead to 19 on a 3 from E. Shirts. Soon afterwards M. Shirts had a rebound put back. With 5 to go in the third, Weiser 34, Parma 17. 
 The hoops then opened on both ends with the teams trading buckets. 
 Weiser’s Maloney stopped on the block found M. Shirts open for an 8-footer. 
 Next trip to offense M. Shirts hit Kendall Rynearson for a 14-footer in the corner. 
 Maloney continuing to rack up assists, got the ball to Rynearson for another baseline bucket. 
 The third ended with Weiser up by 11, Weiser 43, Parma 32.
 The final quarter of the championship was ripe with intensity. The Panthers continued to cut into the Wolverine’s lead as Weiser tightened up. 
 With 1:35 remaining, Weiser was up by three. M. Shirts increased it to five with two made free throws. Weiser was up 48-43.
 Neither team added a field goal after this; making it a battle at the line. 
 Weiser up by 2 with 8 seconds to go Weiser’s senior Macy Maloney showed her poise and mental toughness sinking two incredibly important free throws. Those clutch shots gave Weiser a 4-point lead, putting the game away. 
 Weiser won the 2023 SRV District Champions by 51-47. 
 M. Shirts continued to play solid for Weiser with 12 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 assists. Noyer played strong, also added 12 points, and had 7 rebounds. Brady Reed contributed 8. Maloney, Lerew, and E. Shirts all added 5 points. Rynearson had 4. Maloney also had 5 assists. Yraguen had 5 blocked shots.

 Both Weiser and Parma have advanced to the Idaho 3A State Championships. Weiser plays Sugar-Salem at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16 at Skyview High School.
