Ladies split conference games on the road
by Joyce Taylor
The Lady Wolverines played two conference games this past week. Tuesday, Jan. 17, the ladies traveled to Fruitland which seems to always be a battle.
Nearly a month to the day, Weiser defeated Fruitland in the Tom Falash gym 65-54. Well, this game was a doozy. It all began with the freshman team taking nearly two hours to play. Weiser trailed at the start but retook the lead by the end of the first quarter. They held on to win 39-25. The JV did not fare as well dropping their game 38-29.
The varsity game was everything it was supposed to be except the outcome. Weiser would lose in overtime 63-60.
Starters for the varsity were Kailee Lerew, Brady Reed, Macy Maloney, Mattie Shirts and Tobie Noyer.
M. Shirts controlled the tip and just like that, M. Shirts to Lerew for the layup. Noyer hit a down town three. Macy inbound to Reed for the bucket, the foul and the made free throw. Weiser was up 8-0 with just over a minute played.
Fruitland went to a pressure defense and the wheels fell off the bus. It was like a lid was tightly shut on the Weiser basket. Fruitland went on a scoring drive to earn 10 points leaving just 2:10 left in the quarter. They would finish out leading 15-13.
Second quarter action was horrific for our gals. Scoring just 6 points in this quarter, Fruitland had a fairly substantial lead at the half 30-19.
Give our ladies some credit. They came storming back in the third quarter. One of the biggest factors in this game was foul trouble for the Wolverines. Fruitland scored twice before Weiser got on track. Noyer inbound to Lerew for two. Lerew returned the favor by hitting Noyer who hit another three point shot. Ellie Shirts came in and she is a master at the steals. She hit a lay up. Weiser closed the gap to only trail by 6 with half the quarter played. The two teams traded shots and at the end of three, Fruitland 44, Weiser 38.
Weiser pulled within two behind the urging of the seniors, 46-44 in the fourth quarter. Fruitland would score and Weiser would answer. Maloney hit two critical threes in this quarter. At 2:56 left in the fourth quarter, Maloney passed to Lerew for the big time THREE! Weiser led 50-49.
The score see sawed back and forth with Reed hitting a THREE as well. Weiser called time out with 37.8 showing on the clock. They held the lead 53-52. They tried to stall but it felt like a life time. Reed was fouled and sank both shots. It was a three point lead but was it enough? Fruitland had 12.3 seconds to make it happen and they did with a baseline three. That sent the teams into overtime.
Overtime was not kind. Four different players fouled out with three on the Weiser side. Overtime is four minutes. Fruitland took the lead at 3:13. They were also making their free throws. It was a sad outcome to a good comeback in the second half by our Wolverines. Fruitland would win 63-60. Weiser needs Parma to beat Fruitland for a better seeding in District play.
Scoring: M. Shirts 15, Reed 11, Maloney and E. Shirts 9 each, Lerew 7, Noyer 6 and Kendall Rynearson 2.
Payette
Saturday, Jan. 21, the Lady Wolverines were in Payette to take on the Lady Pirates. This game was not nearly as intense as the Fruitland game and Weiser had complete control from the start.
The freshman looked good but lost a heart breaker when the Payette JV players came in to play the final quarter. They would lose 34-32. The JV won by using a full court pressure defense in the third quarter, 47-29. The varsity left no doubt winning handily 63-17.
The same starters as the Fruitland game started this one. Payette snagged the tip and scored first. That would be the only time they had a lead. Weiser held Payette without a score until under two minutes to play in the first. At the end of one, Weiser 19, Payette 3.
Weiser continued to cruise with whole sale substitutions being made five players at a time. The ladies rushed off the bench when Coach Laraine Harrison called them for playing time. Everyone saw plenty of minutes. Free throw shooting and fouls continue to be a worry for this team. At the half, Weiser had increased their lead to 36-9.
Weiser was doing a pretty good job on the boards putting back some offensive rebounds and pulling down defensive rebounds. Steals were good as well. Weiser was in complete control after three leading 50-15.
The mercy rule works in the fourth quarter which simply means the clock runs if one team is 30 plus points ahead of the other team. Weiser would finish out the game winning 63-17.
Jasi Yraguen had a stellar game scoring 10 points to co-lead the team.
Scoring: Yraguen and M. Shirts 10 each, Noyer 9, E. Shirts 8, Reed 7, Lerew 6, Maloney 5, Hannah Samson and Kendall Rynearson 4 each.
