First baby of 2019 born at Weiser hospital is a girl

The first baby of the new year born at Weiser Memorial Hospital was a girl who arrived at 8:39 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2019.
Freya McCue weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces and was 19.5 inches in length. She was delivered by Dr. Lore Wootton, with Two Rivers Medical Center.
Both mom, Julia Bourasa, dad Zack McCue and baby were doing fine. Local media were invited to meet the first baby of 2019 on Wednesday. Mom and baby were tentatively scheduled to leave the hospital on Thursday.
Wootton said the baby arrived pretty close to her due date, and she knew Freya would be born close to the new year.
Bourasa said she didn’t think she would have the first baby of the year. Her grandmother Rose was excited about her daughter having the first baby of 2019.
Freya is the third child for Bourasa, who lives in Weiser and also has a daughter, 2, and a boy, who is a year old.
Weiser Xi Nu Sorority member Valerie Donicht presented Bourasa with a basket of items that a mom and baby can use. There were bibs, diapers, lotion, baby wipes, bottles, baby blanket, clothes and much more.
Donicht said the hospital called her after the first baby was born and she immediately went shopping for a baby girl. She waits until she knows the gender of the new baby before buying clothes.
Because the first baby at WMH was a girl, all the clothing she bought was pink. The sorority has unofficially designated her as the new baby greeter, a job she admits is a lot of fun.
The sorority used to collect presents for the new baby from Weiser businesses, but there are few stores that stock baby items anymore. The sorority goes out and buys items for the new baby.
The sorority’s tradition of honoring Weiser’s first baby of the year with a gift basket has been going on for many years. Donicht has been a member of the sorority for 34 years and it has been going on for as long as she can remember.
The nonprofit Friends of the Hospital also gives all new moms at WMH handmade items like blankets and hats.
An average of 70-80 babies are delivered annually at WMH, according to marketing manager Layna Hafer. The number dipped slightly to about 50 in 2018, she said.
