Delays likely on U.S. Highway 95 north of Council for bridge work

Motorists headed north on U.S. Highway 95 are likely to see delays and detours this summer as work continues to replace the Weiser River bridge located 10 miles north of Council.
Built in 1939, the bridge has reached the end of its design life. The new structure will include a wider bridge deck and upgraded guardrail, among other safety enhancements.
Construction started on the bridge in early March and is scheduled to be completed by this fall. The cost is $7.1 million and the contractor on the project is Knife River Construction, according to information released by the Idaho Department of Transportation.
During construction, the bridge will be reduced to one lane with alternating one-way traffic. Temporary signals on each end of the bridge will direct motorists. There also will be intermittent and ongoing nighttime closures up to 12 hours that will require drivers to take a detour.
Pilot cars will guide motorists through the detour on old Highway 95 and Fruitvale and Glendale roads. Trucks longer than 40 feet will not be able to use the detour.
Seal coating and pavement preservation work also started on U.S. Highway 95 between Cambridge and New Meadows during the second week of June.
ITD said sealcoats are a cost-effective way to preserve and extend the life of the pavement.
Construction will occur during daytime hours. The project is scheduled to be complete in July.
Motorists will be guided through the work zone by flaggers and a pilot car. Short delays are possible and ITD encourages everyone to slow down, follow posted speed signs and watch for crews working in the area.
