Blood drive starts slow, but beats goal in end

Have you even thrown a party where just about everyone was a no-show?  That was the stomach-punch feeling during the morning of March’s quarterly blood drive.
Donors trickled in at an alarming slow rate as we volunteers twiddled our thumbs. We feared we wouldn’t even meet our goal of 50. Then around 12:30 p.m. (completely opposite of a normal drive) the donors started arriving and they kept coming steadily until our closing time of 2 p.m
Not only did we meet our goal of 50, we exceeded it by 14. Checking the stats I’ve been keeping since 2014, this was the best March drive I’ve ever recorded.
This quarter, two new Weiser residents joined our list of donors. First-time donor Brandi Cox, 24, recently moved to Weiser from Price, Utah. Her pretty, green hair (perfect for St. Patrick’s Day) bespoke of her sparkling personality.  She said she was happy to be in Weiser and happy to donate blood.
Rhonda Hirata was a long-time donor in Maryland before moving to Weiser.  Her mother-in-law, Charlotte, is one of my favorite Weiser ladies.  We are very happy to welcome Rhonda not only to Weiser, but to our donor “family.”
We are very grateful to all our donors.  Those who gave their permission to print their name are: Larry Lee, Connie Lawrence, Jason Bair, Cindy Duncan, Mandy Hoobery, Darrian Hoobery, Jeff Kahler, Fred Haun, Randy Hibberd, Mari Bionaz, Chris McCord, Bret Karnes, Janet MacLean, Jill Link, Tim McKnight, Mark Christensen, Brian Johnson, Ralph Graham, Sheila Sorensen, Altha Snell, Sandy Cooper, Bob Barber, Jessii Moser, David Hopper, William Campbell, Candy Reedy, William Taylor, Lyle Kleppin, Pat West, Linda McLaughlin, Rick Haynes, Sarah Imada, Molly Jensen, Jake Evans, Kellie Reel, Verna Voris, Rhonda Hirata, Nadine Glascock, Alisha Horton, Scott Ellwood, Jennifer Moreno, Tina Frei, Julie Derr, Stephany Pope, Sherri Breaux, Kim Hamilton, Bruce Winegar, John Winegar, Zane Beams, Suzanna Hubele, Pablo Yzquierdo, Charles Winegardner, Mary Walker, Brandi Cox, Patricia Galligar, Dennis Cooper, Samantha Long and Christopher Lee.
The blood drive could not happen without the help of the volunteers.  Delores Overacker, Patty Dickinson, Rosa Yzquierdo, Nancy Futrell and Anna Loos of Xi Nu Sorority took charge of the kitchen (purchasing food supplies, making sandwiches, keeping the food tables stocked for the donors).
The expense of the sandwich makings, paper supplies and WIFI was covered by a generous donation from MTE.  Delicious cookies for the donors were contributed by Lauriette Phi Sorority and a fabulous ham lunch was a combined donation from all five groups in Beta Sigma Phi and prepared by Xi Nu Sorority.  Those Xi Nu ladies are wonderful cooks!
Kenet Haun made phone calls and reservations while Pat West and Dorothy Evans handled the registration table. Lyle Kleppin and Alex Chavarria escorted donors from the draw stations to the food table.
Let’s continue this winning streak through the coming year. Weiser’s next blood drive will be held in the Vendome on Wednesday, May 8, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Please call Alex Chavarria at 208-602-7138 to schedule an appointment.  Your blood could save a life.  There’s no better way to spend an hour of your time.
