On the morning of Nov. 23, 11 senior football players chosen from the Long Pin League for the West team took the field at Eagle High School for the East/West Shriners 8-man All-Star-Game.
Representing Tri-Valley were Michael Carpenter, Jayden Mink, Cody Nixon, and Orion Southwick, offering both offensive and defensive skills. Coaching the West team was Charlie Shepherd.
The Lady Wolverines were on the road last week for both of their games, and came away with additions to both the win and the loss columns.
The Lady Wolverines faced-off against the Ontario Tigers first. With every passing week, the Lady Wolverines have improved on their full-court press, their shooting percentage and their accuracy from the free throw line.
This game was a testament to that improvement, with the Wolverines shooting 40 percent from the field and 63 percent from the line, a large improvement from previous pairings.
Weiser pulled out a win 49-47 over Nampa Christian on Saturday afternoon after both teams traded the lead back and forth in the final minute of overtime.
The surprisingly scrappy 2A Trojans came back from a nine-point deficit early in the game to lead by one point at halftime, run up a six-point lead in the third period and almost get the upset in Weiser’s gym.
Weiser coach Brad Adolfson said the Wolverines had a solid first quarter and then let up on the gas, allowing the Trojans to get back into the game.
A number of Weiser High School varsity football players were recently named to all-conference first and second teams by the coaches in the 3A Snake River Valley Conference.
Senior Logan Wood was selected as the special teams player of the year in the league.
Wood was a punt and kickoff return specialist with speed and the ability to find holes in the defense. He ran back numerous kickoffs for big gains and touchdowns.
The Lady Wolverines hosted the Lady Trojans from Nampa Christian High School prior to the Thanksgiving hiatus, and with a large contingent of Wolverine fans in attendance, the Lady Wolverines were able to get into the win column for the first time this season.
The fast-paced play and the full-court press employed this season by head coach Nick Reed came to fruition and worked well against the Trojans, resulting in numerous turnovers and limited the Trojans ability to shoot from inside the paint and kept the Trojan shooters outside the arc.
The Weiser High School wrestling team is returning 30 experienced grapplers from last year, including 15 who have made a trip to the 3A state championships and are undoubtedly hungry to go back.
They will be joined by some new faces on the roster of 45 kids who came out for the program this fall.
The team should be able to put two wrestlers in each weight division, except for the heavyweight class at 220-280 pounds, which will go unfilled for now.
Weiser High School varsity basketball coach Brad Adolfson said the Wolverines will be a balanced team this season that will rely on solid play from returning starters and some newcomers.
With six players coming back this year, there is a core group of experienced athletes to build the team around. Some younger players out of the 34 kids who came out for the program also are going to have to make a difference on the court.
The Lady Wolverines traveled to the home of the 4A Caldwell Cougars last week for their first game of the season, but were unable to get the win with shooting struggles and dropped the game 47-25 to the Cougars.
The Wolverines struggled to find their shooting groove in the first quarter, but still managed to outscore the Cougars 7-5 with a three-point bucket from Madison Phillips and a basket apiece by both Abbey Shirts and Andrea Bouvia.
The Lady Wolverines hosted the New Plymouth Pilgrims last week in their first home match-up of the season, and despite an impressive surge in the final quarter, the Lady Wolverines just couldn’t come back from a first half scoring deficit and lost the game 41-47.
The Wolverines got on the board early with a basket and a free throw by senior Sara Lundberg, but the Pilgrims were able to counter with a pair of buckets of their own.
Fans of Weiser High School basketball will notice the floor in Tom Falash Gym was redone and now features a big Wolverine logo in center court.
The work was requested by high school administrators as part of the school’s 10-year plant and facilities plan. It had been more than 20 years since the wood floor was refinished.
