Weiser wrestlers were in Elgin, Ore., last weekend at the John Rysdam Memorial Tournament where they handily took first place by beating Baker, Ore., among others.
Since this tournament followed the La Grande tournament last weekend, it is natural that there would be bouts with wrestlers from last weekend, especially since Baker and Elgin wrestlers were at both tournaments.
I remember reading about the numerical coincidences connected with 9-11. Things like the fact that New York City contains 11 letters; New York was the 11th state to enter the Union; George W. Bush contains 11 letters; the first airplane to strike the Twin Towers was flight 11; and etc.
After a slow start against Melba in the opening minutes of Friday night’s game, Weiser lit up the scoreboard by hitting five 3-pointers from downtown to quickly catch up with the Mustangs.
Weiser varsity basketball coach Brad Adolfson credited a solid defensive effort by the Wolverines as key in Thursday night’s 54-37 win over New Plymouth at home.
“I think we played pretty good defense, and I think that leads to better opportunities offensively. The key was our defense. It was just a great overall team win,” Adolfson said.
New Plymouth’s best scorer, Kaden Leslie, had 23 points on a recent night against Vale, but he couldn’t buy a basket at Weiser against the Wolverines.
The Lady Wolverines paired up against both the Melba Mustangs and the Lady Trojans from Nampa Christian High School last week, and came up short in both non-conference games.
Sara Lundberg was on fire from behind the arc, with four three-point buckets, but the rest of the Wolverine squad struggled with their shots and were successful with their shot selection only 26 percent of the time.
However, the fast-pace and shooting of Melba proved to be too much for the Wolverines to overcome; dropping the game 53-32.
On Nov. 30, an enthusiastic audience sat on the edge of their seats for the curtain to rise on this year’s Tri-Valley varsity boys basketball team. Their premier performance was held at Timberline High School against the Rockland Bulldogs.
The Titans roster boasts four seniors: Michael Barnett, Jayden Mink, Cody Nixon, and Orion Southwick joined by junior Ty Barnett. Coming off the bench in leading roles are Garrett Bunker, a junior, and Michael Carpenter, a senior.
Five wrestlers made the finals Saturday night at the Muilenburg Tournament in La Grande, Ore. This is a major feat considering the talent that competes here. Teams come from the Portland, Ore., area, the I-5 corridor and the Tri-Cities area of Washington, among other towns along the way.
Coming off of two victories from their opening debut, the Titans met up with the Vandals on Dec. 4 in McCall.
The Vandals controlled the tip, and with the help of a 7-foot junior and a deep bench that kept fresh legs on the court, stormed through the first quarter with a 10 point lead over the Titans.
Thawing a bit, Jayden Mink and Orion Southwick broke the Tri-Valley cold snap with 14 points that chipped away at the Vandals lead and pulled the Titans to within four points with a halftime score of 25-29 in favor of McCall.
The Weiser wrestling team competed this last weekend at the Bucks Bags duals at Capital High School in Boise.
Weiser had an impressive start to their season, knocking off some 4A and 5A teams including Eagle (45-36), Skyview (51-33), Thunder Ridge (60-28), Bishop Kelly (54-27) and Moscow (64-20).
Weiser lost to Rocky Mountain, a 5A school by only a 6 point margin (45-39). Not bad for a first competitive outing. Weiser had two wrestlers who finished the weekend undefeated: Brody von Brethorst and Conor Marsh.
