Senior center honors local veteran for service

 The Weiser Activity Center for Seniors held a Veterans Day celebration Friday, specifically honoring local veteran Albert Alvarez for his service to his country.
 Alvarez, 87, was born in Burley, Idaho on July 28, 1935, and worked as a carpenter before serving in the U.S. Army as a teletypist from 1959 to 1962. He worked for city utilities following his time in the military and, incredibly, retired from the U.S. Forest Service when he was 81-years-old.

It is a little hard for me to believe that next week is Thanksgiving! If time flies when you are having fun, I must be having the time of my life!
 Seriously, Thanksgiving is my second favorite holiday after Christmas. It is a favorite, not because of the food, or the football games. Instead, it is a chance to be with family and to reflect on the people and situations in our lives for which we need to express gratitude. So, I would like to share with you some of the things I am thankful for:

 The Weiser Elk’s hoop shoot for boys and girls ages 8-13 will be held Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Weiser Middle School. Registration starts at noon with the competition at 1 p.m. The event is free and the Elk’s Lodge pays all expenses. For more information contact Darrel Krause at 208-550-2365.

Nazarene Church Drive-Through Nativity

 The Weiser Nazarene Church, located at 510 E. Indianhead Road in Weiser, encourages the public to attend its annual Drive-Through Nativity set to take place Dec. 9 and 10, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Dec. 11, Weiser Nazarene will present the Liberty Quartet, beginning at 10:45 a.m. Also on Dec. 11, the church will hold its Community Christmas Cantata. Please note: this event will be held at Weiser Christian Church, 1299 E. 2nd St. in Weiser at 5 p.m.

Blood drive Dec. 7

 Weiser’s quarterly blood drive will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Vendome Events Center. Please call Alex Chavarria at 208-602-7138 or Dorothy Evans at 208-549-5589 for an appointment. Appointments are preferred but every attempt will be made to accommodate drop-ins. Rapid Pass is strongly encouraged. Your blood could save a life.

Upper Country Singers to perform Dec. 4

 The Upper Country Singers and the Upper Country Children’s Choir will present the Sounds of Christmas on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m. at the Cambridge Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall. Enjoy an afternoon of holiday entertaiment and free refreshments. Donations are encouraged.
