WFD holds ceremony in honor of Stuart’s 35 years of service

Family, friends, colleagues, and other community members gathered at the Weiser Fire District station on Wednesday, Oct. 25, to celebrate Assistant Chief John Stuart’s retirement.
 Stuart served the community for more than 35 years while also serving as CEO at MTE (Midvale Telephone Exchange), from which he will also retire at the end of December, he told the Signal American.

Weiser High School’s Proud Sound dominated DIII

Weiser High School’s Proud Sound marching band finished a three week run of marching competitions on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the 2023 Mel Shelton District III Marching Festival, dominating the 3A division with “bests” in  visual performance, music performance, and general effect, plus taking firsts in both auxiliary (colorguard) and overall within the division.

Blocked field goal results in 35-32 Weiser victory

Weiser emerged victorious in a close 35-32 quarterfinal matchup against the Bulldogs in Kimberly on Friday, the game ultimately won in the final seconds.
 Both teams traded blows throughout, but with only seconds left on the clock, Weiser junior defensive lineman Karston Walker broke through the Bulldog line, batting down a 34-yard field goal attempt that, if successful, would have tied the score, sending the game into overtime.

F&G volunteer says Chinook once populated Weiser River

The Columbia is the largest river in the Pacific Northwest.
 It serves as a boundary for much of southern Washington and northern Oregon, the roughly 270-mile stretch trafficked by sturdy, diesel tugs pushing barges filled with goods into America’s interior and others sending them out across the ocean.
 Under the water’s surface is a less observed yet equally thriving highway where salmon swim in either direction, depending on their given stage in a short and turbulent lifespan.

Coats still available to those in need

Dear Editor,
 It never ceases to amaze me how generous the Weiser community is. I sent out a plea for coats (new or used) in September and what a response we had! The drop box at the library had to be emptied constantly, sometimes daily. We collected used coats in pristine condition for all ages and sizes and many brand new children’s coats.

Memorial Park to receive new playground equipment

Congratulations to the Weiser football team on winning another state playoff game! Good job!  And good luck at Sugar-Salem this week!
 Sunday Cathy and I had a very interesting lunch date with another couple. The four of us have all known each other since high school and began reconnecting off and on a few years back.  Sunday was the first time we had really had a chance to talk at any length. Lunch lasted for four and a half hours. But this was not the main reason we had gotten together. 

Busy Bee Thanksgiving potluck dinner

 The Busy Bee Club will host a Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Saling School in Mann Creek for Mann Creek neighbors and friends. Directions: north of Weiser on Hwy. 95, turning right on Jackson Road. Join us for an old-fashioned homemade Thanksgiving dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and beverages provided by the Busy Bee Club. Please bring a dessert, salad or side dish.
