Think Valentine’s Day and the first things that usually come to mind are roses and chocolates for that someone special.
While a dozen red roses is still the gold standard on Valentine’s Day, Dana Clary, owner of The Flower Basket in Weiser, said she also gets a lot of orders for mixed bouquets.
A bouquet that includes a couple of roses with other blooms can be an eye-popping display of color. Big Gerbera daisies and stargazer lilies are popular flowers to include in arrangements.
Clary’s big order of 750 or so roses for Valentine’s Day was due on Tuesday from Boise. Roses come in a dazzling choice of colors these days, including white, yellow, pink, lavender, coral and more.
Expressing affection with roses, a “premium product,” is never cheap, but there are different price points. A half-dozen roses can be purchased for $37.99 and a dozen in a vase with greenery will run about $67.99.
“We try to keep it pretty practical and affordable,” Clary said.
It’s also popular to add balloons, candy, a card or a stuffed animal to the bouquet order for a little something extra. A plant can be a nice choice for the occasion and it will last longer than cut flowers.
Customers can even order both roses and a box of candy with one phone call or order online at the store’s website. The store distributes hometown favorite Weiser Classic Candy chocolates.
Valentine’s Day is actually not the busiest day of the year for Clary. It comes in second to Mother’s Day. The store “gets slammed” with flower orders for moms on that one day in May.
For Clary and floral designer and employee Kaitlyn Loya, this week will be really busy right through Valentine’s Day. The store is taking orders right up to Valentine’s Day, although it’s best to get in an order for really fancy arrangements a little earlier in the week, like by Wednesday.
The store will also have ready made bouquets and roses ready to go for anyone who wants to stop by on Valentine’s Day. No advance order needed for the pre-made arrangements or roses.
“We will absolutely have flowers ready and also a variety,” she said.
Friday will be delivery day for everything Valentine related, and Clary has recruited numerous drivers to help, including family members.
These are also busy days at Weiser Classic Candy as well. The National Retail Federation estimates $1.8 billion is spent on candy for Valentine’s Day, and that buys a whole lot of chocolate.
While Valentine’s Day is the second-biggest day for flowers. It is the single biggest day at Weiser Classic Candy every year. Business is up 50 percent to 60 percent for Valentine’s Day over the next best day of the year at the downtown Weiser confectionary.
And, yes, the heart-shaped boxes with an assortment of chocolates are the best sellers. The velvet mints do really well, too, store owner Patrick Nauman said.
Because Valentine’s Day falls on Friday this year, dinner for two might be the way to end a day dedicated to romance. Restaurants in Weiser are preparing something special for the occasion.
