Last week, Tim Brady of the Idaho Youth Sports Commission, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, delivered about $2,000 of youth sports equipment to the City for the Weiser Recreation Department.
This was not the result of a grant application or request made by the City of Weiser. Brady contacted Ken Anderson, our recreation director, to ask if we could use the equipment, to which, of course, Ken said, “Yes!”
The donated equipment included baseball pants and helmets, football shoulder pads, tennis nets, etc.
Are you like me? I didn’t expect to see snow like this in February. If fact, I can’t remember ever having this much snow fall this late in the winter. What makes it even stranger is how little snow we had the rest of the year. I like the seasons, but I also like the unpredictability of the weather within the seasons. This is part of what makes Idaho special.
Wow! The weather this past week has been great! On Saturday we were able to be outdoors at the sand dunes with the grandchildren to dig, and build, and watch them run around. The last time we had been with them was before Christmas to exchange gifts outside. It was a bit colder then, so the 50-degree weather Saturday was a nice change.
This past weekend Cathy and I had the opportunity to go to McCall and do some snowshoeing in Ponderosa State Park. There are groomed trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing which makes the snowshoeing pretty easy.
We thought we would try to do a little bit of off-trail walking in order to get a better look at the lake and quickly discovered the advantages of staying on the trail. Off-trail is a lot more work and takes coordination, which is something I have less of than I used to.
I don’t know about you, but around our house, there are a lot of projects, both large and small, getting done these days.
Since there aren’t many social activities going on, it’s a good time to take care of these projects.
One room in our house has had the wood floor stripped, sanded, and refinished, with new paint on the walls, and decorations.
The next project will be the kitchen floor, a new dishwasher, and re-grouting the countertops. In addition, I’m finishing up an online college course and working on wooden ship models.
Since Monday was Martin Luther King day and the City of Weiser office was closed, Cathy and I decided to take a drive. We weren’t sure if the road would be passable, but decided to go to Succor Creek and then out the other side through the Owyhees to Highway 95 north of Jordan Valley.
The road was rocky and slippery in places. The pickup was covered in mud by the time we got back, but the sights were well worth the drive.
For anyone who has followed the national news, last Wednesday was a horrific day. Watching as thousands of people stormed the nation’s Capitol to disrupt the elected members of the House of Representatives and Senate from doing their Constitutional duty, was not something I could ever have imagined watching in my lifetime.
No matter where people stand on the political spectrum, belief in our system of government and democratic processes is paramount to us, as citizens, in order to operate as a free and open society.
This last Saturday, Cathy and I decided we needed to get out of the house for a bit. Since our choices for outings are somewhat limited due to the coronavirus, we decided to get out the snowshoes and drive north. Along the way, we saw families out sledding in the snow. We are a bit old for that now, but it was fun to see them enjoying themselves and it brought back nice memories.
I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas. I know Santa was probably better to me than what I deserved.
Like a lot of folks this year, Cathy and I spent the holiday by ourselves. I know I was in good company. Whether or not Cathy would say the same thing, I’m not so sure.
This week has not been a normal one for the week before Christmas. Instead of going to parties and get-togethers with friends and family, it has been spent with quiet outings and evenings with my best friend and wife, Cathy. Christmas shopping has mainly been limited to being done online.
Other family members, who have had to be in public due to work, school teachers and such, are quarantining themselves from us in order to protect Cathy and me from the virus. This is not an ideal situation but we have adapted.
