Wolverines lose heartbreaker game against Fruitland

The Weiser High School varsity baseball team on Monday hosted Parma for senior night.
Seven Wolverine seniors were recognized for their contributions to the baseball program.
They included Ray Calley, Jarret Mink, Tyler Pope, Beau Shields, Eric Torres, Dayton Turrentine, and Kooper von Brethorst.
“Seven seniors is a lot to lose and they will be missed,” said Wolverine head coach Bowe von Brethorst.  “Many of these men have played since they were in tee-ball together and it is exciting to look back at their progression. There are some real athletes here and even some who will continue baseball at the college level and it just makes me excited for Weiser baseball.”
Mink got the start for the Wolverines on the mound and went three and two-thirds innings. He tallied five hits, four runs and eight strikeouts on the night.
Shields came in on relief for two and a third innings recording no hits, no runs, and five strikeouts.
Parma couldn’t get anything going on offense in the first inning, but Weiser got a couple of nice hits from Jack Burke and Jarret Mink and scored one.
Parma couldn’t muster much offense during the second inning, either, recording three strikeouts. In the bottom of the inning, Pope hit a fly ball and reached first on an error by the short stop.
Dayton Turrentine hit a fielder’s choice and then advanced to second on an error by first base. Calley got on base after being hit by a pitch.
Turrentine stole third base on a pass ball at home and Calley stole second at the same time.  Eric Torres grounded out to the second baseman, but scored Turrentine in the process and advanced Calley to third.
Weiser would retire the inning 2-0.
Parma would get on board scoring in the third inning and Weiser held their score in the third as well.
In the fourth inning, Parma put two more on the board on a two-out rally with a walk, a single to right field, another walk and then a pass ball that went outside of the field of play scoring two for the inning.
Weiser tied it up scoring two more and ended the inning 4-4. Turrentine got on base with a nice single, as did Calley and Koda Coers. A walk by Burke, and capitalizing on some pass balls, tied the game for the Wolverines.
Parma again couldn’t get anything going against our relief pitching, but that was not the case for the Wolverines, capitalizing on errors in the bottom of the fifth inning and some heavy hitting once again to bring the score to 13-4.
Parma couldn’t add anything in the top of the sixth, but the Wolverines would again capitalize on a walk and an error to win the game 14-4 in the bottom of the sixth.
Eight Wolverine batters had hits on the night against Parma with Spencer going three for four, Coers going two for two and Burke and Turrentine going two for three each. Coers also had three RBIs for the team. Not one single Wolverine struck out against the Panthers and Weiser recorded just a single error on the night.
Weiser vs. Fruitland
Weiser then travelled to Fruitland for a rematch with Fruitland winning the first one.
This was a game where the stats don’t match up with the score at all. Weiser outhit the Grizzlies 10 to 5 and had 5 RBIs vs Fruitland’s 4.
Two Wolverines had multiple hits, Kooper von Brethorst and pitcher Willy Shirts and each had two RBIs for their team.
Shirts got the start on the mound for the Wolverines and recorded four hits and six runs, with six strikeouts over six and a third innings.
Beau Shields came in for just a third of an inning and allowed one hit. Weiser started out in the first inning going three up and three down on offense.
Fruitland would get on base with a walk, a line drive to left field and then a fielder’s choice to von Brethorst at shortstop who got the out at first.
The inning ended on a ground out to Shields at first and the inning was 1-0 Fruitland.
Weiser again struggled with the bats in the second inning and repeated the performance from the first inning. Fruitland would ground out to Shields at first, get a walk to get on base, and then advance the runner with a single fly ball to left field.  Shirts struck a batter out and another single to left field would allow a Grizzly to score.
Another batter would score on an error in left field and then a ground out to Spencer on third ended the inning with Fruitland up 3-0.
Finally in the top of the third inning, Tyler Pope would get a hold of the ball and get on base with a long single to center field but that was all the Wolverines could muster.
The Grizzlies would get on base with an error at third and then a single on a line drive to right field.
Runners would advance on an error and Weiser would record their first out with a bunt to Shields at first, but allowed one to score.
Weiser would walk the next two batters and then get a line out to von Brethorst at shortstop.
Fruitland was up 5-0 by the end of the third inning.
Weiser would go on a two-out rally with Shirts singling to third base and advancing to second on an overthrow.
Jarret Mink would take his turn and hit a nice double to right field scoring Shirts, shortening the lead to 5-1 for the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Fruitland’s batters went three up and three down due to two strikeouts from Shirts and a pop up to Spencer at third.
In the top of the fifth inning Weiser got some momentum going with Shields and a single to left field.
Coers stepped up and hit a line drive to center field and advanced Shields to third.
Two Weiser batters would strike out and von Brethorst would double to center field and score Shields and Coers.
On his way to second von Brethorst was thrown out to complete the inning, with Fruitland 5, Weiser 3.
The bottom of the fifth saw a repeat performance of three up and three down due to a strikeout with the batter looking, a line out to Coers at second, and a ground out to Shields at first.
Top of the sixth inning, Burke hit a single to center field, Spencer doubled on a hard hit ground ball to left field, and Shirts hit another single to center scoring two. Weiser’s offensive onslaught stopped there with the next three batters getting out, but bringing the score to 5-5.
The Grizzlies would get on base with a walk in the bottom of the sixth inning, but would get thrown out on a steal to second by Burke and a tag by von Brethorst. The Grizzlies also had a pop up to first and a strike out by Shirts to finish off the inning.
Von Brethorst was the only hit during the top of the seventh inning and had a nice hit to second base.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Fruitland got on with a walk and then grounded out to von Brethorst at shortstop.
Shields came in on relief and walked a Fruitland batter, followed by a line out to Pope at right field.
With two outs a pass ball advanced the runner to second and third and a hard hit to right field ended the game by scoring the Grizzly batter.
Weiser lost the heartbreaker 6-5, but gave Fruitland a lot to think about.
“We out hit Fruitland, but we had seven walks and four errors and those are not defendable,” von Brethorst said. “We have to be able to clean some things up and figure some things out before district play and I am confident that we will do that.
“We have had some boys who just come out and consistently play so I know we can battle because we work hard.”
Weiser took on Homedale Monday to end league play and Districts will start the following week.  Go Wolverines.
