Weiser traveled to Payette on Friday, Jan. 24 for a little hoops action. The JV team won handily. The varsity also won but it was not without some trepidation. The first quarter went fairly well but the second wasn’t nearly so swell. Regardless, Weiser came out the victor winning 76-46.
Payette would score first for their one and only lead on the evening. Josh Mizar and Garrett Walker both hit three point shots to open the scoring for Weiser, 6-2 W. Fouls were a problem for both teams this night leading to a revolving door at the scoring table for substitutions.
Isai Herrera put back an offensive rebound. This move was textbook. Garrett Walker went high for the “O” rebound, caught the ball in air and shot it through the cylinder for two, 10-6 W. Shayd Crossley put back an “O” rebound. Owen Funke drove under the basket and hit the reversed shot, 14-8 W. Mizar put back an “O” rebound. Crossley drove for a bucket. Mizar found Brayden Nordgren on the baseline for a three to close out the scoring in the first quarter. Weiser 21, Payette 10.
Weiser was hot in the minutes of the second quarter but Payette matched them point for point in the latter half of the quarter. It was de ja vue as Mizar found Nordgren for his second three on the night. Kolin Cook to Crossley for the banked shot, 26-10 W. Mizar nailed a three! Cook stole the ball, was fouled and sank both free throws, 31-17 W. Mizar stole the ball finishing with the lay up. Crossley hit a bucket to up the score to 35-19. At the end of two, Weiser 35, Payette 24.
A much better scoring third quarter allowed Weiser some breathing room. That end of the court has better lighting as well. Mizar with the hoop. Herrera to Mizar for the jumper in the key, 40-26 W. Herrera to Garrett Walker for a baseline three pointer, 45-28 W. Crossley to Mizar for a three. About a minute later, Crossley to Mizar for another three, 52-32 W.
There were some free throws in this stretch as well. Herrera with an incredible move to the hoop when he could find no one open. This was by far the best play on the evening. Payette had the ball on the Weiser end line after a Weiser turn over. The inbound player failed to see Nordgren lurking. The pass was somewhat nonchalant as Nordgren stepped in front of the ball, gathered it in, dribbled and laid the ball neatly through the cylinder, 59-37 W. Mizar finished the quarter with a basket. Weiser 61, Payette 37.
Cook found Crossley for the bucket more than three minutes gone in the fourth quarter. Crossley stole the ball on his end of the court and kissed the ball off the glass (nearly a dunk) for the bucket, 65-41 W. Diego Delgadillo and Kaghen Cluff saw playing time in this final quarter. Cluff stole the ball. Grant Walker had two buckets in this quarter as well. Delgadillo had two easy lay ups. Weiser won the game 76-46.
Scoring: Mizar 22, Crossley 14, Garrett Walker 10, Nordgren 9, Herrera 6, Funke, Grant Walker and Delgadillo 4 each, Cook 3.
