Senior Kash Cobb ran amok Friday night in Pendleton, Ore. in a 70-45 road win against the Buckaroos.
According to official stats, Cobb rushed for 278 yards on 22 carries for 12.6 yards per carry and five touchdowns. He also recorded a total of 12 tackles from his middle linebacker position on defense.
Junior running back Cole Ingle turned in an impressive performance as well, rushing for 107 yards on 6 carries for a 17.8-yard per carry average and a touchdown. Together, they accounted for 385 of Weiser’s 576 yards of total offense.
“Kash had a big day; those two combined did a nice job,” Weiser head coach Tom Harrison said Monday. “And then Kolin had some nice yards passing on some good routes.”
Senior quarterback Kolin Cook went 6 of 11 for 163 yards and a touchdown. He also had a pick-six on defense to start the second half, giving the Wolverines momentum that persisted through the remainder of the game.
Senior receiver Josh Mizar caught two passes for 79 yards and a touchdown, followed by Luke Sarich with two catches for 45 yards. Ingle added one catch for 22 yards and tight end Austin Ashley had one reception for 17 yards.
“We did have an interception right before the half, but he (Cook) was effective throwing the ball,” Harrison said. “We were especially effective running the ball, so our offensive linemen did a great job and our tight ends blocking, too, so we were able to manage the victory.”
Pendleton High School is a 4A-6 school within the OSAA (Oregon School Activities Association) classification system and is a member of the Greater Oregon League.
The win brings the Wolverines to an even 2-2 record on the season so far, the team recovering nicely from a sputtering 0-2 early season start.
Friday’s game was initially a close contest, with both teams trading blows through the first two quarters, Weiser possessing a 35-32 lead by the halftime break.
The Wolverines, however, found another gear in the second half.
The Buckaroos received the kickoff to start the third quarter, beginning at their own 10-yard line. Cobb recorded a tackle for no gain on first down, followed by Cook’s pick-six from his outside backer position, taking the ball 15 yards into the endzone for the score.
Weiser had pushed the score to 56-32 by the end of the third.
The Wolverines went up by another touchdown early in the fourth on a two-yard run by Cobb, extending their lead to 62-32.
Pendleton would score two more touchdowns in the fourth, with Weiser adding one more of its own on a 17-yard run by Cobb.
“By the fourth quarter, I felt we kind of had the game in hand, so we were able to get in a lot of players,” Harrison said, adding that his defense needs to work on disrupting pass plays.
“Defensively, we gave up a lot of yards passing,” he said. “We struggled to get any kind of pressure on their quarterback. They had super-big linemen, and they had a running back who was real good.
“Our goal was mostly to contain him going into the game, that was our focus.
“We just didn’t expect to see them come out passing the way they did. We gave up a lot of points and that concerns us a little bit in the passing game, so we’ve got some work to do still.”
