Wolverines add a conference win during Homecoming week
Weiser’s varsity boys soccer team ended up with only one game during Homecoming Week, traveling to Meridian right after Thursday’s Homecoming parade. They added a 1-0 win to their conference record, defeating The Ambrose School Archers.
A scheduled home game against Baker City on Monday, Sept. 19, was rescheduled to be played this week on Thursday, Sept. 29, starting with a junior varsity game at 4 p.m.
In Meridian the first half was a shooting fest, but without a score for either team. The Wolverines had nine shots during that 40 minutes, spread between Santiago Perez #9, Yovani Ramirez #11, Danny Clemmer #15, and Alex Magana #1, while Wolverine goalkeeper Diego Delgadillo recorded 12 saves.
Twenty-five minutes into the second half, Carlos Lopez #7 passed the ball to Magana #1, who chipped it over the Ambrose keeper for a goal.
Five minutes later, Ambrose came close to tying the score when Delgadillo fouled an Archer in front of the box, giving a direct penalty kick to the Archers. Delgadillo made the save, keeping Weiser in the 1-0 lead when the clock ran out, and Delgadillo adding four saves in the second half for 16 total.
“We’ve been working hard in practices on improving, and Ambrose has improved also,” senior midfielder Juan Cervantes said. “We’re working on giving and going, passing. We’ve got three games next week, then Fruitland and McCall the next week. McCall on their field is our last game of the regular season.”
“The kids have had a great week with all of the Homecoming activities,” Coach Kathy Bokides said. “And, it showed in the first half of the game. They refocused and came together in the second half, and played very well. They had some other very near goals among those first half nine shots. One bounced off the crossbar, and another off a goal post.”
