This past weekend the Weiser Wolverine wrestlers travelled to Nampa to wrestle in the Rollie Lane Invitational.
Rollie Lane was a legend in Idaho wrestling coaching his Nampa team to nine district titles and three state championships. He also won Idaho Coach of the Year six times during his tenure. The Rollie Lane tournament holds much of the same legend as its namesake. Teams come from six different states to try their hand at some of the toughest wrestling in the northwest. This year 93 teams and over 1,500 wrestlers competed with Weiser making their mark and taking 23rd as a team and scoring 82 points.
Many of the young men who participated in this tournament saw up to eight matches which is a lot in comparison to many other tournaments. It is also one of the first competitions after Christmas which can sometimes be a struggle when wrestlers are trying to make weight.
Weiser saw some great results but also saw an opportunity to make adjustments.
Klete Cook at 138 and Stockton Young at 157 represented Weiser well and battled well into the fifth round of consolation. Each of them wrestled five matches during the two day tournament and scored some points for their team.
Cole Ingle also represented well at 132. Ingle went deep into the sixth consolation round, scored 12 team points, and wrestled five matches during the tournament.
Ty Cobb placed sixth for the Wolverines at 144 and scored 12.5 points for his team. Ty wrestled a whopping eight matches and even had a sudden death high stakes match where he came out on top.
Kash Cobb also did well and got on the podium for the Wolverines. Kash placed fifth at the tournament and wrestled eight solid matches to earn 23 team points. Kash also won four of his matches by fall winning one of his matches in just 32 seconds.
“Rollie Lane is exactly what we needed to see where we are at and we need to do better,” Head Coach Chad Gibson stated. Gibson took responsibility for performances saying that he has a clear picture of where they are and the team will work to make the necessary adjustments to wrestle to the level that they should.
Weiser will host McCall and Timberline this Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 5:30 p.m. The weekend looks to be a busy one with three different tournaments including the Padilla Invite in Parma, the Jaybird for the girls team in Nampa, and the Buhl invite in Buhl.
