Wolverine wrestlers compete in two tournaments this past weekend

by Katie von Brethorst
The Weiser wrestling varsity men’s team headed to Lewiston this past weekend for the Clearwater Classic.
The Wolverines were scheduled for a dual at Fruitland last Wednesday, but with Fruitland shutting down school due to sickness, the dual was rescheduled for a later date.
Ten young men participated in the Clearwater Classic and had some decent results taking third place during the tournament behind Lewiston and Mead, Wash.
Fifteen teams competed in this tournament, many from Washington with tremendous talent. Weiser also had tremendous success in winning by pin or fall in a number of matches.
Notable falls included Tristan McMahill in 13 seconds, Rylee Willet in 19 seconds, Jesse Lockett in 21 seconds, and Maddox Stevens in 37 seconds.
Willet, Stevens, Malachi Hoobery, and Clayton Beesley each recorded three falls during the tournament.
“These ten guys showed up and went to work. We had some successes and some losses that we will learn from,” Head Coach Drew Dickerson stated.  “Some of these men that our guys faced are state champs in their own state, so we worked hard and did well,” Dickerson added.
Finishing fourth for the Wolverines was Clayton Beesley at 145 pounds  Third place went to Tristan McMahill at 285 pounds  Weiser had three second place finishers with Kaleb Grove at 195 pounds, Rylee Willet at 220 pounds, and Jesse Lockett at 285 pounds.
First place finishers were Maddox Stevens at 160 pounds, and Malachi Hoobery at 182 pounds.
While the Wolverines varsity team was in Lewiston, the junior varsity and the Lady Wolverine wrestling squad were competing in Melba at the Ron Johnshoy Invitational.
The JV got in some great matches and saw some good competition and the ladies went to work as well.
If you haven’t gotten the chance to see these ladies in action, it is a lot of fun to watch. Weiser has some pretty competitive young ladies who look to fare well at the state competition in the next month.
Five lady Wolverines competed and also placed in the tournament which is a large feat.
Finishing in fourth place was Anika Nunez at 106-113 pounds. Aliyah Alhilla finished second at 170-195 pounds. Weiser also had three first place finishers with Violet Jones at 106-113 pounds, Audrey DeLeon at 120-126 pounds, and Whitney Turner at 170-195 pounds. Congratulations ladies!
 Go Wolverine wrestling!
