Weiser Wolverines wrestling traveled to Elko, Nev. this past weekend to compete in the Golden City Duals and the Kiwanis Spring Creek Invite tournament.
Weiser wrestled Elko and Spring Creek during the Golden City Duals and put up some big points after battling back from a 24-0 score where the lighter weights faced some big challenges.
Cole Ingle at 132 got the ball rolling winning by a big decision score of 13-6 to finally put some points on the board. Everyone else wanted to follow suit and did well including Klete Cook at 138 who won by major decision and Ty Cobb winning his match at 144 by technical fall.
Ricky Erickson had quite the battle according to head coach Chad Gibson, “Ricky fought hard but couldn’t stop the tech fall, but after that Stockton Young, Luke Sarich, and Kash Cobb went on a tear and launched the Wolverines back into the dual with a triple entendre of falls giving us a score of 30-29 to go ahead.”
Juan Molina followed their lead with an awesome match winning by fall at 190.  Matthew Monterrosa stepped up into the 215 weight class and grabbed a last second take down to secure his win by decision and then Kaiden Peck won his 285 match by fall for a finale dual score of 45-29 in favor of the Wolverines.
Next up was Spring Creek which Weiser won 54-30. Weiser won nine of its matches and all nine were won by fall. Two of them were won in 39 and 42 seconds.
 Individual results were as follows:
Sean Elliott 106 lost by fall; Eric Ramirez 113 won by fall; Kash Williams 120 lost by fall; Trevin Moser 126 lost by fall; Cole Ingle 132 won by fall; Klete Cook 138 won by fall; Ty Cobb 144 won by fall; Rick Erickson 150 won by fall; Stockton Young 157 won by fall; Luke Sarich 165 won by fall; Kash Cobb 175 won by fall; Juan Molina 190 lost by fall; Matthew Monterrosa 215 lost by fall; Kaiden Peck 215 won by fall.
Next the boys headed over to Spring Creek for the Kiwanis Spring Creek Invitational.
There was some amazing competition and a lot of matches wrestled through the weekend ending with Weiser taking third place during the competition.
Tournaments are a different beast because even if you don’t place for your team, you can still contribute points to your team’s score.
Head Coach Chad Gibson was excited after the long travels explaining, “It’s a long trip but it was fun and a good indicator that we are headed in the right direction. A third place finish isn’t anything to be ashamed of here especially with how close the scores were. This was a great weekend to be a Wolverine wrestler or fan,” Gibson added.
Finishing in sixth place for the Wolverines were Corinna Parsons on the girls side along with Klete Cook at 138, Santiago Perez at 150, and Stockton Young at 157.  Bringing home fourth place was Matthew Monterrosa at 190.
Wrestling five tough matches and winning four of them by fall to take second place was Cole Ingle. Taking first place for the Wolverines were three strong athletes, Ty Cobb at 144, Luke Sarich at 165, and Kash Cobb at 175.
Ty Cobb saw some action and won each of his matches by either fall or technical fall with one of them recorded in just 24 seconds. Ty also contributed 35 points to the team total.
Luke Sarich wrestled to first at 165 winning all four of his matches, the first three by fall and his final by major decision.  Sarich also contributed 33 team points.
Kash Cobb also wrestled well as usual to secure his first place finish with 34 team points contributed. Kash wrestled four matches and showed his determination winning each and every one of them by fall.
The Wolverines will be busy hosting Fruitland on Wednesday and then traveling to the Tiger Grizz tournament in Idaho Falls over the weekend.  Go Wolverines!
