Weiser High School’s boys’ tennis team brought home its second-in-a-row 4A State Championship team title, along with the State banner bonafides after this past weekend’s tournament in Nampa.
Both of Weiser’s Wolverine boys’ singles players, Dauge McClellan and Alejandro Travanco, added team points as they made their way through the brackets, finally facing each other in the championship round. At the end of the contest, McClellan won the title in another very competitive match, and Travanco claimed the second place medal.
McClellan had a bye in the first round, defeating Sugar Salem’s Eli Pannell 6-1, 6-3 in the second. In semi-finals, he defeated Fruitland’s Preston Rawlinson 6-4, 6-3
Travanco defeated Sugar Salem’s Dax Blaser in the first round 6-0, 6-1; Coeur d’Alene Charter’s Mattis Macmillan in the second, 6-0, 6-0; and Gooding’s Teague Peterson 6-2, 6-4 in semi-finals.
In the championship match, McClellan took the 6-1, 6-4 win.
Weiser had qualified two boys’ doubles teams for the 4A tournament, as well, with the team of Kolin Cook and Diego Delgadillo earning runner-up medals.
The Wolverines’ other team of Luke Bake and Klete Cook added to the overall team score with a 6-0, 6-1 first-round win over Coeur d’Alene’s Adrian Rodriguez and Kieran Gallagher, before taking a second round 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 loss to Sugar Salem’s Calvin McClure and Ben Owens.
With a bye in the first round, the Lady Wolverines girls’ doubles team of Halle Seward and Adalyn Brush defeated Sugar Salem’s Kylee Johansen and Isabel Falin 6-0, 6-1 in the second round. The girls gave fans an exciting semi-finals match, going three sets, but taking a loss to Sun Valley’s Kiki Pate and Attie Murray, 6-3, 5-7, 10-5.
Congratulations on a great season, Wolverines!
