Weiser High School junior Isabella Froshiesar has been selected as an American Legion Auxiliary Syringa Girls State participant in the 78th annual leadership development program June 15-20. On average, around 250 girls from across the state gather for the week-long experience where they assume and carry out the duties of municipal, state, and national leaders.
Froshiesar told the Signal American she first became aware of Girls State as a freshman. Froshiesar said Weiser High School counselor Katie Maloney’s daughter, Macy, was interviewing for a spot in the program that year, and Maloney had told her a little bit about it.
“At the time, I was thinking about trying to graduate with an associate’s degree, and Mrs. Maloney told me I could get my government credit from participating in Girls State,” Froshiesar said. “And, there is actually a dual Poli-Sci credit offered, so I really want that on my transcripts. That will look good, and just going to the conference is going to look good.”
“I anticipate learning and developing more leadership skills and, obviously, how the government runs at every level,” Froshiesar said. “I hope to learn from representatives, plus everything that goes into our government and how we contribute to it.
“One of my dearest friends from Fruitland, Adilee Elam, went to Girls State last summer, and now she’s the Idaho State representative for Girls State,” she said. “She just went to Washington D.C., and I know she had a great experience. She will be back this year as a staff member to assist in running the program. I’m so excited to have her by my side.”
From the start of her high school experience, Froshiesar dove into agriculture classes and FFA, building on every experience offered and taking on leadership roles. Her development through FFA and the joy she takes in meeting and working with other people has prepared her well for the Girls State week in front of her.
She served as Weiser’s FFA Chapter reporter during her sophomore year, and is a co-historian for the chapter this year. On top of that she is also currently serving as the Western Idaho District reporter.
“I plan to run for an FFA chapter office again, and I also hope to run for an FFA District office again, as well,” she said. “Without FFA I would be kind of lost. It’s such a huge part of my life now, and has given me so many opportunities and new relationships with people from across the state. It’s played a big part in my character development.”
Weiser FFA Chapter members attend the organization’s national convention in odd-numbered years, and Froshiesar is looking forward to traveling to the 98th National Convention and Expo in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 29 through Nov. 1.
Following high school, she said she wants to continue her agricultural pursuits at Washington State University in Pullman, where she plans to major in crop management and minor in ag business.
 “I’m excited,” she said.
