Weiser volleyball sweeps Vale 3-0

Weiser hosted visiting Vale Thursday, Aug. 26, handily beating the Vikings 25-15, 25-21, and 25-23.
Things started out slow, the Vikings taking an early 2-0 lead, but it didn’t last long as sophomore Abi Wilkins, going on a scoring run from behind the service line, resulted in an 11-2 Wolverine lead.
The Vikings worked to get back into the game in the first set, pulling to within three points at 10-13, but the Wolverines re-grouped triggering a 4-0 run by freshman, Paisley Noyer, to take a 17-10 lead.
The Vikings rallied back, scoring three more, but the Wolverines countered with three of their own, with junior, Jasi Yraguen, behind the service line.
With the score sitting at 20-13, the Vikings tried to get back in the set, but strong serving from sophomore, Danica Lockett, all but clinched the first set victory with a 23-14 lead.
The Vikings managed one more point on a Wolverine side-out before Abi Wilkins finished the set from behind the line with a 25-15 victory.
The Wolverines got off to a bumpy start in the second, with the Vikings jumping out to an early 5-0 lead. Weiser battled, but continued to trail into the fourth service rotation.
Trailing 5-10, Noyer began serving and helped to shorten the scoring gap by pulling the Wolverines within two points at 8-10.
The Wolverines continued to struggle. Despite a 15-10 deficit, however, they managed to stay within striking distance. A trading of side-outs and points for several rotations came to a halt when junior, Mattie Shirts, stepped behind the service line.
Trailing 11-16, Shirts remained serving for eight consecutive points, helping Weiser climb out of the basement with a 19-16 lead, their first of the set. For the remainder of the second set, it was all Wolverines, closing out with an impressive come-from-behind 25-21 win.
Determined not to fall behind again, the Lady Wolverines wasted no time getting ahead in the third set, Locket serving up a 5-0 lead. With the Wolverines leading 9-4, the Vikings were able to go on a four-point run to get back into the set 8-9.  However, Yraguen halted the lead change opportunity with a five-point run of her own.
Leading 16-9, the Wolverines continued to maintain their lead and despite a surge by the Vikings to pull within three points at 16-19, the Wolverines never let down their guard and maintained their lead to the 22-17 point.
The Vikings had another four-point surge and pulled themselves closer at 21-22, but the Wolverines held the Vikings off to take the third set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
Sophomore libero, Bailey Coleman, led the Wolverines with 17 digs. Jasi Yraguen was also big in the match with six kills and three blocks, followed by Whitney Cordes with five kills.
Paisley Noyer was impressive in her varsity debut with three aces.
