Weiser represented in U.S. Global Leadership Coalition

Mayor Randy Hibberd
This week’s article is a little short.  Sarah called to say that there was not much space this week.
About a year ago, I was contacted by an organization called the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition about attending a meeting in Boise. I was not able to find much information online except to say that there were many big names in government and the military supposedly associated with this organization, so I felt I could at least go, check it out, and walk out if necessary.
At the meeting, each member of our congressional delegation had staff attending, as well as state legislators, a former congressman, a retired State Supreme Court Justice, as well as others.
The purpose of this bipartisan group is to promote diplomatic and humanitarian leadership in the world to avert the need for military intervention later.  I couldn’t understand why they would want a smalltown mayor involved in this work, but it seemed like a worthwhile cause.
Then a couple of months ago, I was invited to Washington, D.C. to attend a forum.  Cathy and I went as much to see D.C. as to go to the forum. Both the forum and the sightseeing was very educational.
And, in case you were wondering, this was all done at Cathy’s and my expense. Well worth it.
I won’t go into details about the conference at this time because I think Phil Janquart and I will be sitting down to talk about it for another article. I will just say that it was enlightening.
And now, on to City business.
Ken Anderson, your City Recreation Director, tells me that the swimming pool could use a few more lifeguards. If you or someone you know is at all interested, please contact Ken or Jhonna at the Recreation Office located in the Vendome office at 309 State Street, or by calling 208-414-0301. The lifeguards we have say they love the work and the pay is reasonable, especially considering that much of the job involves sitting in the shade by the water watching people enjoy themselves.
Also, if you have a ho-hum week this next week, all I can say is that you are missing out. With Fiddle Week starting this Sunday there will be a lot of activity in little old Weiser.
One of the events is a Fun-Run taking place at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 15. The reason I am pointing out this event in particular is because it is a fundraiser for the Weiser High School volleyball team. The start and finish line will be the sand volleyball lot in Memorial Park.
Well, that’s it for this week. I hope you enjoy all there is to do.  Weiser really is a great place to live, work, and play.
