Recently, the students and teachers of Weiser High School, participated in the annual canned food drive sponsored by the WHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). All items collected were donated to the Help Them to Hope organization. Students and teachers contributed thousands of non-perishable food items to be distributed to those less fortunate in our community.
The world can often be an unfair and cruel place. No matter what we do, there will be people out there from any age out on the streets barely making ends meet and ending each day on an empty stomach.
Thus, many organizations feel like it is our civic duty to help those in need due to us being in much more fortunate positions compared to them.
Help Them to Hope is one of those organizations. Every year, to help those in need, they hold a canned food drive with the help of WHS students and educators.
Students were instructed to bring in nonperishable food items. The items ranged from cans of beans, ramen, and water, to even peanut butter, all in an effort to help those in need.
Some teachers even offered rewards to the students who brought in cans such as extra credit or classroom points for fun activities. One such teacher was Mrs. Rebecca Gonzales with her classes bringing in the most cans overall.
Every single student in the high school participated including the teachers. This led to the insane amount of food donated ending up with other 4,000 items being collected.
These cans were then given to Help Them to Hope who will now be distributing them throughout the community of Weiser making sure more people can sleep on a full stomach.
The event was held from Nov. 11 to Nov. 14 and the fact the kids could donate that much in only a couple of days is truly inspiring and shows that this generation will have great futures.
Many students are a part of FCA and helped to make this event something truly special. The main leaders were Keagan Willet, Kailee Lerew, and Lacey Christopherson.
Let’s hope that next year, this event can continue to feed families across Weiser and be a great way for the students of WHS to show their Wolverine pride by giving back to the community that gives so much to them.
