Game tied 45-45 at end of regulation play, sending the game into overtime
The Weiser Lady Wolverines played against the Vandals in the SRV Consolation Championship in McCall on Feb. 8. The game was to determine which team would advance to the state play-in game. It was an intense match, with both teams playing tough. The lead changed multiple times during the game, with the Wolverines holding the lead for long stretches of time. However, the Vandals tied the game at 45-45 at the end of regulation, forcing the game into overtime. The Wolverines suffered a heartbreaking 7-point loss, with a final score of 51-58.
Weiser started strong in the first quarter, with Kailee Lerew driving inside and scoring 2 points by stepping around McCall’s tall post. McCall answered with a bucket and a 3-pointer. After a couple of minutes, Ellie Shirts found Hailey Eames open in the middle of the key on a baseline out-of-bounds play. It took another two minutes before Lerew found Kendall Rynearson open in the corner for a 3-pointer. Eames played tough defense and blocked a Vandal shot, and Lerew converted it to points with a lay-in. At the end of the fast-paced first quarter, Weiser was down by 1, 11-12.
The Wolverines came out in the second quarter with intense defense, holding the Vandals to 6 points while scoring 15 points themselves. Shirts tied the game at 12 with a made free throw. Soon afterward Rynearson hit a deep 3-pointer for Weiser. Midway through the second quarter, Lerew picked up a steal as she chased down a Vandal player and took the ball away in mid-dribble. Weiser would go on to add two more 3-pointers from Rynearson. The first one was on a Weiser sideline inbounds play, and the second was a bank shot from the top of the arc. Weiser’s Evie Dolton ended the quarter with a nice bucket after a pass from Shirts. As the teams broke for halftime, Weiser led by 8 points, 26-18.
Weiser maintained their lead in the third quarter, but McCall managed to reduce it to 4 points.
Rynearson continued to work hard for rebounds and to get open on offense. She had the bulk of Weiser’s points in the third with an offensive rebound put back, and two 3-pointers in the corner, both off passes from Shirts.
Shirts also picked up a 3, this one from the top after a pass from Trista Buescher.
Lerew finished out Weiser’s scoring with a steal and lay-in with a minute to go in the third.
With 15 seconds to go, the Wolverines were up by 7, but after the Vandals went to the line for an and-one situation the score was Weiser 39, McCall 35.
For much of the fourth, the Wolverines were in control adding a few points while the Vandals went scoreless for almost 5 minutes. With 3:08 to go, it was Weiser 43, McCall 37.
The Wolverines then stalled out unable to score, with 1:13 remaining in regulation. McCall made a 3, making it a 1-point game.
McCall took the lead with another 3, about 30 seconds to go. Fifteen seconds later, Buescher made a no-look turnaround jumper near the block to tie the game at 45 all sending it into overtime.
In overtime, Eames gave Weiser the initial lead with a made free throw 45 seconds in. McCall answered with a bucket. On the next possession for Weiser, Buescher made a baseline hook shot giving the Wolverines a 1-point lead again.
