In a team effort the Wolverines move to 5 and 0 to start the 2024-25 season

The Weiser Wolverine boys’ basketball team faced the Ontario Tigers for the second time this season on Dec. 16. Earlier in the month, Weiser had won 84-42. In this matchup, Weiser secured another victory, winning 69-44. The Wolverines move to 5 and 0 in a fantastic start to their 2024-25 season.

The Tigers struck first, scoring 90 seconds into the game and then again 30 seconds later. This was the only time Ontario would hold the lead. Almost two and a half minutes in, Kolin Cook found Owen Funke open beyond the arc for a 3-pointer. A minute later, Isai Herrera gave the Wolverines the lead with a post move in the key.
Weiser quickly came alive, converting offensive rebounds into points, creating fast-break opportunities through steals, and moving the ball effectively on offense to generate open shots. They held Ontario to just 4 points until the final minute of the first quarter while Weiser consistently scored. At the end of the first period, the score was Weiser 20, Ontario 8.
In the second quarter, the Wolverines continued to score rapidly. Josh Mizar made a rebound putback, Garrett Walker secured a loose ball for a layup, Funke executed a Euro-step layup, and Cook converted a long defensive rebound into points. Walker also had another rebound putback before the Tigers managed to score again.
Weiser maintained their scoring streak, while Ontario managed a few more shots before halftime. The score at halftime was Weiser 38, Ontario 18.
After the break, the Tigers came out strong, starting the second half with a 9-point scoring run in the first three minutes. The Wolverines regained momentum when Cook drove into the key, scoring Weiser’s first points of the third quarter. Mizar picked up a steal and scored on a fast break, followed by Crossley, who had a rebound putback and then assisted Mizar for a 3-pointer. The scoring slowed down significantly in the final three and a half minutes of the period, with Ontario adding only 2 points near the end and Weiser not able to convert in those final minutes. The score after the third was Weiser 49, Ontario 31.
As the final quarter began, both teams focused intently on their gameplay. Mizar opened the scoring with a rebound putback just a minute in. Cook then scored again on a layup after faking a pass.
The teams exchanged a few baskets, and Karsten Walker assisted Mizar for a 3-pointer, extending Weiser’s lead to 20 points at 58-38. With about 90 seconds left, Diego Delgadillo found Brayden Nordgren open in the corner for another 3-pointer. Delgadillo capped off the scoring for the night with a rebound putback, giving the Wolverines an impressive 25-point victory, 69-44.
Mizar led the team with 25 points, while Crossley contributed 9 points. Herrera and Garrett Walker each had 8 points, Cook scored 7, and Funke and Nordgren both added 5 points. Delgadillo finished with 2 points.
